I signed up to Ancestry for a year found out all I could in about three months, if you have some Irish ancestors as I have its not very good as I could not find any information on them at all, but did better on the english side.

    For free genealogy information try
http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/ Go down to the bottom of the page to the search word in red

If it's the American Ancestory.com site set up (I think) by the Mormon Church, it's only free for a while (I think). It's more use if you have rellies in USA/overseas.

The freebmd site is fantastic. Also if you search on genealogy sites, you'll find message boards , covering specific names, parts of the country, WWI, WWII and they post answers and lookups of your ancestors to help each other out. Like MSE, it's addictive! :) You can also find free software to download which helps you keep track of who lived where, married to whom and to figure out the relationships between each generation - I found free Brother's Keeper was really great.
    Still haven't found my inheritance yet..... ;)

  • Actually there is a lot of free stuff out there.

Freebmd is one site, familysearch.org is the mormon site that has free to access 1881 census, then the other census's from 1901 back are on line - you can search on them but to see the images of the pages you have to pay. On top of that if you have family in the navy or were in ww1 you can download info from the national archives website. If you want to know anymore then let me know
