Old o2 debt

Hi, I am new to the forum because I urgently need advice on what to do with an old debt, and also want to use the forum.

In 2005 I had a problem with my o2 mobile phone contract, so I ended the contract early and I was left with over a year of line rentals to pay in one lump sum. Well to cut a long story short, I was 19 and didn't pay. I didn't hear a thing from them until recently where I have had a letter saying the debt has been sold from o2 to a debt company and that litigation proceedings are going ahead for £506.96, going to county court etc.

The thing is, this debt doesn't show on my credit report and I'm concerned that if I start to pay it will show up and if I don't pay it will also show.

I really don't know what to do, as this debt is very old.

Any advice would be very helpful

Many thanks

Could this debt be statute barred, no payment or written acknowledgement in 6 years ( or 5 in scotland). Are you in scotland?

02 may only report to one credit reference agency so may explain its absense, equilfax and experian are the main 2, but there is also callcredit.
Did you dispute this debt, or were you a rash 19 yr old who just refused to pay rather than sort out the dispute?

Send the debt collectors the prove it letter. - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2

Thanks for info, I check regularly with Experian, will look with equifax too now.
Not in scotland, was a very rash 19yr old and in all honesty didn't want to pay.
Could you give more info about Statute barred please? Is that where it is written off after 6 years?

    Statue barred

England (6 years) - Debt is not enforceable in court, no court orders are granted if you use limitations act 1980 as your defence. Debt still exists and you still owe it but if you state you will not pay they cannot ask for payment.

Scotland (5 years) - Debt is not enforceable in court, debt is legally extinguished - written off. If you pay money to a debt like this in scotland you can get it back as you don't owe it.
