Sorry if this has been posted before, if so i didnt find it!
After looking through ebay and local ads, i found that second hand bikes were quite expensive considering that they are second hand.
I went to my local tesco and found adult mountain bikes for £60. There is a ladies version and a mens version with 26" frame. There were also a 24" version with syspension, but this was slightly more.
Hope this helps someone.:j

I wouldn't advise anyone purchase one of these bikes because they are basically rubbish, but if you really have to and it's a choice between a bike and nothing at all then take it to a local bike shop to have it checked over/expertly set up whether it comes ready assembled or there is some DIY involved.
A poorly set up bike can be extremely dangerous and very inefficient meaning the rider has to do all the work and not the bike. There have been numerous cases of people buying bikes from large chain stores/supermarkets only to come to grief on it a few miles down the road. A quick look at any cycle forum will tell you that.

I bought one of these a while ago, but I got Halfords to make it up for me. They will do this for £15 - and for a couple of quid more you get a 12 month servicing contract for when the chain comes off, the brakes loosen etc - so this is worth considering. The chap at Halfords said "one of the worst bikes we have ever had to make up", but it is safe to ride and made up properly.
I have some time for what Exel is saying - as it happens I ride my bike about once a month down a traffic free cycle path at about 10mph - so happy enough with it, given what I use it for, but it is good to consider how you are going to use it before you spend your money. Good spot though, as not everyone can afford something sturdier. Sal x0 -
I've had a bike from Tesco and I confirm they are garbage! They well be 'only £60' but there is a reason for it!
I made it up myself and rode it to and from work for about a month before I decided that I'd wasted the £60, bit the bullet and replaced it. I bought one from the Decathlon Rockrider range, which for a starter bike is great value. It cost me £135 I think, although this wasn't the cheapest they did. Been riding it daily for around 8 months and haven't had a problem!
It's worht the extra few quid, if you buy the Tesco one and intend riding it more than once a year then you'll end up paying for it anyway!0
