So you get £30 for when you are on call - I am assuming that the hourly rate kicks in for when you are on the telephone. This would be a great job if you are okay waking up quickly. There will be nights when you get £30 for doing nothing

I get a massive £54 per week and that's to be on call from 9pm until 7am each evening Monday to Friday and then from 9pm Friday night until 7am Monday morning. Public sector. I don't have a problem with it. I think your rates actually seem very generous.

My OH when he's on call, is on call on a Friday at 4pm, till 8am Monday morning, then 5pm - 8am every night/morning of each week day and finishes on the Thursday morning at 8am.

Every hour in between those times in the same week, he does his normal full working week.

He gets £100 for being on call, and then overtime for any calls he does. (time and a half for a sat and double time for a sunday, time and a half after midnight till 8am on weekdays)

Yes it's a pain in the backside when he doesn't get a call because we can't plan anything, or when he gets a call at 11pm, then comes home, then has to go back out at 4, then comes home and then has to work a full day and then be on call that night too and so on, but it's his job and the money is good.

There are plenty of people who have to work like this ~ it's not illegal though!

I suspect you're never going to accept that this is standard practice. The fact is that you're not actually working, but available to work. It's a heck of a lot better than being on a variable part time rota where you don't know when you'll be working from one week to the next.

I went for a job that had an on call element, which was in addition to the normal hours at 2.20/hr regardless of whether I was called out or not. the only stipulation was that you had to be contactable by mobile during that time. However if a call came in, pay at generous overtime rates applied. I was quite gutted I didn't get it.

I'll leave you with the chorus of a song by the late Glasgow comic Matt McGinn:
    "I'm looking for a job with a sky-high pay
A four day week and a two hour day
It's maybe just because I'm inclined that way
but I never did like being idle"

um, I'm not idle. I already work full time. I was looking at changing my job and took a bit of interest in this one. Till I saw the rates.
And I don't want sky-high pay, just minimum wage.

When you are on call you are not working unless required so at £7.50 an hour plus the £30 call out fee you are well above NMW

    It's called a standby allowance.

It's a payment so you are available to be called...THEN the pay rate cuts in
