Incidentally, as this happened a month ago, and she is still not well
'You can return to your usual activities, including going back to work, after about a week. However, some people may need to rest for longer while others can return to work after a few days. Follow your surgeon's advice about driving. You shouldn't drive until you're confident that you could perform an emergency stop without discomfort'.

"However, some people may need to rest for longer"
Key statement pulled out of that paragraph. Also it is down to doctors opinion and the OP cousins current state of health, not what some fact sheet on a website says. Also there may be other complications not mentioned.

I can't see what difficulty there could be if someone recuperating from a common operation went to stay with a relative in Bognor who would wait on them hand foot and finger and in doing so returned to fitness much more quickly than if they were looking after themselves in their own home.
What would be very different would be a week in Majorca with the stress of travelling, heat, uncertain food and worry about lack of insurance.................. ....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0 ....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)0

Don't disagree. However a month ago, and yet to book a holiday, suggests quite a bit longer. And it wasn't just 'some' website. It was the largest private medical company in the UK.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0

I would agree with that entirely. Obviously the person concerned has had serious complications  and yet feels it is a good idea to go abroad!!Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0

Hmm. If i were an employer and someone had an operation and were too sick to work then I'd assume they'd be too sick to travel either... Have the holiday at the end of the sickness but get signed off as fit to return for the holiday and then return to work as normal after the holiday. Seems a safer way of doing things than bobbing off on holiday while sick.0

Which is also a general fact sheet, not a patient specific one. Regardless of this it could also be something job specific they can not return to work for. Also but I think the Op stated the holiday was already booked before hand anyway.0

She works in admin. Her op was over a month ago. Not due to see her consultant for another month;) Now if BUPA tell me that an op will usually mean I'm back to work in a week, and the OP's cousin isn't even going to be considered fit 2 months later - would you be swanning off for a sun and sea holiday?Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0

I have spoken to my cousin this evening, she is going to ask the doctor to write a letter and then see her employer as per the advice given on here.
As for the length of time she has had off so far (4 weeks) that is down to the consultant, not her, me or anybody else, he told her before the op she would not be back at work for at least 6 weeks - as he is the medical professional, then she has listened to him and done what he has asked.
she has been sitting in the garden for the last few weeks while we have had nice weather and therefore has a tan, but i would have thought it would be common sense to have fresh air rather than lying in a stuffy room bedridden. we do not want to go bungee jumping or anything as daft as that we just want to go away and relax, for her to fully recuperate and get away from the horrible circumstances which we currently have here at home.0

In my experience, medical 'advice' about the recovery from surgery tends to be underplayed, a bit like the pain of childbirth.Don't disagree. However a month ago, and yet to book a holiday, suggests quite a bit longer. And it wasn't just 'some' website. It was the largest private medical company in the UK.
My FIL's patient information booklet following heart surgery said "You may feel some discomfort afterwards."
Now, I don't usually swear, but my reaction on reading this was "Bl**dy H*ll, they've sliced your chest open, cracked your ribs apart, ripped veins from one part of your body and put them in another, then stitched you back up again, that's going to bl**dy well HURT!"
I'm not saying doctors are dishonest, but they always tend to put the best case for recovery, rather than the worst.Signature removed for peace of mind0
