Hi folks, new here and not sure if i'm posting in the right place. If not please direct me to where I should be
I had recently changed bank details at work and have been paid into my new account, however my old account is in the process of being shut and had a closing balance to pay on it before i could officially close it, although have not used it for a while ...... however, I went to the bank to day to pay some money in as normal and was told the account was in credit ..... i queried with the bank and they have advised that my salary had been paid into the account.
As the 2 accounts are with different banks I had to check with my new bank, which i did via digital banking and it would appear that my salary has in fct been paid into both banks ...... what do I do?????
The old account has less than half the salary left in it due to the status of the account and the maney has been used to clear the account. The bank offered to give me the remainder of the money and close the account now but I have said no as this money was ncorrectly paid and have left the account open ..... but can my employer reclaim this money back (I didn't expect the money to go to ths account) ..... THis could end up costng me a smll fortune ...
Any advise greatfuly appreciated.

Why would it cost you any more than if it had not been paid?
If you have been paid twice you need to pay it back.
Use the funds you were going to use to close the account and the surplus now there to pay back the extra pay.0 -
Hi there,
THe old bank account was being cleared over a period of time, not all at once. Paying it all at once leaves me out of pocket!!!!!!
The agreement had been made with the old bank that the account would be cleared over a certain period and when I get paid I pay that amount into the bank. However, as the salary was paid into the wrong account they have used that money to clear the account which would NOT have happened if the money had not incorrectly been paid in.
I do not want to keep the money and will have to wait until monday before I can contct my company, however, I have spoke to the bank and they say that the company wll have to recall the payment but they will only refund the amount in credit on the account. I cannot afford to pay outright the remainder, as the bank have used this to clear the account, I have not touched ANY of the money !!!!!!
I just wondered how this will be repayed, do I have time to pay it off (as I would have done with the bnk under the agreement) as I cannot afford to pay it in a lump sum.

If the bank won't restore the account to the old state with a repayment schedule then you will have to negotiate with your employer the same payment schedule due to it being their mistake.0

I am afraid that you really haven't got any choice. The bank are not obliged to refund any money which isn't in the account - no matter what your repayment agreement with them was. So you will now owe the money to your employer, which can, unless they agree otherwise, then be deducted from your next wage. From the employers point of view they have paid you two wages, and they will want one of them back. If you are lucky, your employer may be willing to consider deducting what you owe over a few months, but they do not have to do so. But that will mean that you will have to explain to them why you have been paid two wages and don't have enough oney to repay them - which not everyone would want to do. Your only other choice is, as suggested, to pay them the remainder from your other account.0 -
If you can't get the old bank account to go back to the original state eg by transferring the right amount into your new account to keep the same negative balance how about trying to arrange an overdraft of appropriate size with your new bank? This way you can close your account and at least be in credit for some part of the month while you pay the overdraft down.0

Couldn't have said it better.Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -
If ElleDee was transferring to a basic account with another bank for the usual reasons, the new bank may not allow the overdraft. If you can't get the old bank account to go back to the original state eg by transferring the right amount into your new account to keep the same negative balance how about trying to arrange an overdraft of appropriate size with your new bank?
