Fortunately the days of moving straight from the army to the police are pretty well over; the skillsets can be very different.
  • http://www.policecouldyou.co.uk/ show all the forces which are recruiting, when they are recruiting.

Unfortunately, with cuts, police vacancies will probably be few and far between for a while now. In fact, current police officers and police support staff, could face losing their jobs.

I'm sure your son will find work somewhere, perhaps he should look at other areas as well such as security if that's the sort of job he is looking for.

I am really shocked at how low the starting pay is and how far the eligibility criteria has dropped since I applied many many moons ago...........

Looking at joining the police is certainly something he can do but as others have said there is no prospect of a move into any specialism for at least the first two years of his being employed. Not wishing to dampen his enthusiasm but he should bear in mind that as a result of the imminent budget cuts many forces have already curtailed their recruitment to the extent of telling those who have recently been accepted that their training courses (and start dates) have been postponed until May 2011 at the earliest and in one case a candidate had been given a course date for September but has been told that it has been postponed indefinitely.
My very sincere apologies for those hoping to request off-board assistance but I am now so inundated with requests that in order to do justice to those "already in the system" I am no longer accepting PM's and am unlikely to do so for the foreseeable future (August 2016). :(

For those seeking more detailed advice and guidance regarding small claims cases arising from private parking issues I recommend that you visit the Private Parking forum on PePiPoo.com

You should check with your local force as I know where we are they have closed the applications due to cuts etc and will be looking at making cuts to police officers soon. He will not be able to go straight into firearms, it is like saying an officer can go striaght into the same position in the army. there are basic skills, principles and law that needs to be learnt first. Firearms is highly competitive as well. If he can't get into the force has he thought about being a special constable until he can and that way he will learn alot of the law and skills for a regular officer. obviously it is not paid but a worthwhile servie to run alongside a day job. It is worth a thought!

Has your son got any work experience other than the army?

The police tend to look for more diverse skills these days, so that officers can "relate" better to the public they serve.
