Is "prove it letter" the best way to get a notice of assignment ??

We have a couple creditors that are dancing around with their wording and won't simply say who owns the debt. I'm fast becoming tired of this. We sent out letters requesting specific information on who owns the debt, which office we should correspond with (as some have numerous offices that we are getting letters from and none of them seem to be able to specifically REPLY to our letters, only send obviously cookie-cutter form letters making threats, which of course don't answer our questions), and a few other specific questions. To date we have gotten a couple responses back, but nobody seems to be able to speak in plain English and say "yes, we own the debt, this is the best office to correspond with," and so forth.
I see people posting about sending the "prove it" letter, however, after reading it, it seems to be more along the lines of "I don't think this is my debt" as opposed to "show me you are legally entitled to collect this debt", IYSWIM. Is that the most appropriate letter to obtain a notice of assignment? Or is there something better. I couldn't find anything after doing numerous searches.
Starting to think along the lines of a "cut out the legal nonsense and just answer the stupid questions" letter.....
