Obviously what I am aware of within the situation is 2nd hand information, he may have exaggerated the situation to myself, but please judge as what he says being true and able to prove as true.
Basic info: He works for a well known fast food franchise, he's 17. Shift was 4pm - 1am.
He went over 5 and a half hours with out a break (he thinks by law i think under 18's need a break every 4 and a half hours - I'm not sure) He asked shift manager *not store manager* for a break and he said to me "if you dont clean you wont get one till 1 am". They had a back & forth .. argument (for want of a better word) and this ended in my friend being suspended. My friend also told me he felt threatened during this "argument". He left work when he was told he had been suspended.
On facebook today the store manager has written
"WRITE A STATEMENT AND BE READY TO TALK TO ME AT 11AM SATURDAY"
As far as I'm aware, that's not the way he should be advised of a meeting?
So my actual questions are
1) Was the original manager within their right to with-hold his break?
2) If the manager was found to be threatening, is he within his rights to make a formal complaint even though he was probably being difficult?
3) Can the store manager be in trouble for not sending out a letter and instead writing it on a public site?
Thanks in advance
xx

He will be allowed a 30 minute rest break after working 4 1/2 hours.
Yes, if the manager is being threatening it is wise to put a grievance in
No, the manager should not inform your chum by facebook.
However;
a - how long has your chum worked there?
b - why has your chum got his manager as a friend on facebook? Print off the message and remove him immediately.
c - has he received any written notification of the suspension?0 -
putting it on Facebook is NOT the way to do it,a letter should have been sent out with all the details of the day and time and your friend is allowed to have someone at the meeting with him.
it will be in his handbook/information pack what breaks he is entitled to and if they are scheduled then they are not allowed to be withheld. If your friend is not happy with how the situation was dealt with he should contact his Hr dept and make a verbal/written complaint documenting everything and if there were any witnesses then they should be asked if they mind their details being passed on.If he works more than 4.5 hrs he should have 30min break but the times and how they are taken should have been agreed when the job started.
Hope this helps0 -

c) Nope..Slimming World: 1stone 11lbs lost in 11 weeks0 -
Fairly sure that at the age of 17, he shouldn't even be working until 1am anyway. None of our under 18's are allowed to work past midnight (Also fast food)0

Does your friend work for the clown? If you know what I mean...
If so, he needs to get in touch with his business manager about this. Store manager being friends on facebook with crew seems pretty unprofessional and this whole thing is being dealt with in entirely the wrong way.0
