probation period

my gf has been working at her place of work for over a year now she had a 12 month probation period. She had no probation meeting what should of took place may 2010 and was informed that they would be extending her probation by 2 months. (this was 3 weeks ago) reasons behind this to sickness were 1nce she had her apendix out and days off sick were either she was sent home or went to show she was ill.
also her senior dosent like her 1 bit and another colleague is having issues with the same senior. now her probation has been extended again till august.
is there a certain time limit to that they can keep you on probation?
as she is extremley upset and annoyed by this

There is no time limit they can keep someone on probation but as she has passed 12 months, they can no longer dismiss her without reason or without going through the company/legally required dismissal procedures.
