Memory Foam questions (looking 4 new bed)

Hi,

We just moved to Dubai, and are looking for a new mattress. I have heard all about this memory foam concept a while ago, and 3 months back got myself a pillow - and its great.
Now we're in the market for a new bed, and memory came up...so:
  1. Tempur seems rather expensive, I have found the Therapedic Memory Touch at 50% less - anyone using Therapedic?
  2. Also have heard that they may get a little hot in summer, but one can always get some form of a cover sheet so they dont get wet, and stay cool...is that correct?
  3. Heard rumours that memory foam will not last as long as an old style (spring) bed - and the sleeping dents appear pretty soon (1-2 years)
  4. If memory foam technology is not that great yet (and affordable) what other recommendations (makes) can one look at - Therapedic, SilentNight, etc?
Many thanks,

I have a memory foam mattress from ebay (£150 for king size), it's full memory foam but has all the outer covers iyswim not just a block of foam, looks like a normal mattress till you sit/lie on it.

Had it now for over three years and it's still fantastic, OH is not the smallest man in the world, and it still holds it's shape.

Are you buying the mattress here, and then shipping it to Dubai, or are you buying one out there?

It won't be full memory foam, it will be reflex foam with a layer of memory foam on top.

It is the reflex foam (not the memory foam) that can start to dip after a while, as the bubbles in it start to burst.
  • I am in Dubai already, but the chices here are not as extensive as elsewhere...lacks a lot of the known brands.

So the two beds I have spotted is from Therapedic (MemoryPlus) and the SilentNight (now here they have a mix of Visco, or Visco&Latex&Firm Foam, or Latex only, or Visco & pocketsprings, or Latex & PocketSprings). The other brand is Tempur themselves, but they are hell expensive in the region.

With so many options its a real difficult decision...if only they had the likes of Serta, Sealy, or any other better known brands.

Therapedic seems to get a 50/50 happy/unhappy rating online.
SilentNight - a UK outfit seems to be very popular in the UK, with reasonable ratings.

I just dont want to spend money, only to find out that in 1-2 years the 'wonderful' memory foam starts sagging...maybe I should just get an ordinary old style bed...and get a 5cm memory topper (and this one can replace every som often).

Hmm...maybe its a good thing there are very few choices here ;-)

    Hi,

We started out a couple of years ago with a memory topper, bought off EBay. Looks horrible without the fitted sheet, but worked ( and in spare bedroom, still does), a treat. When we changed bed we 'upgraded' to a Silent night mattress (no idea which one, but it mainly a matress with the memory foam on top, but built in, if you know what I mean). Takes a bit of getting used to, much firmer that the topper, but 9 months on, no sagging, dipping etc.,
Personally (and OH would not agree), I prefer the nights when he is snoring and I escape onto my matress topper, much comfier:)
(And on a side note, reasonably cheap)!

Well as it is a very hot country you want to stay well away from foam only mattresses, and go for springs with memory foam. Or much cooler would be springs with latex foam.

Tempur are over priced and over rated.

As for Silentnight, you really ought to do a search in the MSE forum before you even consider going anwhere near them.

You are better off staying away from big brands if you can, as you will get far better quality for less money with smaller independent manufacturers.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but in another 9 months there is a good chance you won't feel the same way about it.
  • After reviewing forums, SilentNight is gone from our choice list...looks like we're left with Therapedic...

Here is the breakdown of the Memory Foam bed from Therapedic
    • 3" visco, memory foam
    • 6" high-density poly base
    • .75" super-soft foam, 1" quiltflex, 1.25 oz. Dacron

    vs

    the Innergy Therapedic one:
    • Exclusive alternating coil design
    • Foam-encased coil unit
    • Polyurethane insulation foam
    • Pillow-top cover quilted to 3 inches
    of pure latex foam rubber

    What you guys reckon?

Stay well away from it. It contains the smaller and less supportive reflex foam encapsulated pocket springs. It is a cheap design made to sound better than it is.

Tim, are you saying we should stay away from BOTH the beds mentioned above?

Has anyone seen the comments about the new foam beds on the chem-tox website?
