What do you want your employers to do to appease the situation?

Exactly! Raise a grievance. But what will that do?
Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

I didn't realise you were the OP under an alter ego?
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

I'm just responding with how I would feel in the OP's shoes. That's allowed right?

Of course, even if the question wasn't aimed at you. To me it just seemed a bit wierd. Most people would have put a prefix into the sentance along the lines of 'I suspect they would want the company to do things right next time'

    Thank you for your replies.

I have spoken to ACAS and they have confirmed that my employer should have informed me of the promotion opportunity. They have advised that I speak to my employer and try to sort it out that way, then if I am still not happy to raise a grievance.

How did you find out about the position?

I'd write to the company stating that you've heard about the availability of position X, and as a current employee and perhaps the best candidate for the role, you would like to apply.

I'd then see what they say when they tell you it's already been filled.

I go on ML in October, and know that the office will be having a re-shuffle during this time, so will be keeping a close eye on any team changes, as I have a gut feeling that I'll be shunted into a team with the bone idle over paid people!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

I work for a large organisation and there are always people who choose to be absent from the work place such as maternity leave, annual leave, secondment to outside organisation etc and some people who dont choose so willingly to be absent from the workplace such as those who claim to be sick.

It is unreasonable for every employee who is absent from the workplace to be contacted at home with every peice of information. The employee who is missing from the workplace needs to accept some responsibility for 'keeping in touch'.
When dealing with the CSA its important to note that it is commonly accepted as unfit for purpose, and by default this also means the staff are unfit for purpose.
