0845 are non-geographical, but are LOCAL rate, i.e. 3p/min daytime, 1p/min evenings/weekends! As opposed to 0870, which are NATIONAL rate, i.e. the equivalent of calling anywhere not in the local or adjacent area codes... even if the company you're calling is based next door!0

QUOTE FUDGUKRAINE
I'd stop being a tight!!!! and just call, I wouldn't resent paying 3.5p a minute to get money back, rather than wait to get a response.[/QUOTE]
I can't believe you just said that fudgukraine! This is a money saving website.:p

I say if they haven't responded to your attempts to contact them, contact your credit card company and get the payment refunded. You, the consumer, are protected by Section 75spacey0 -
There's quite a few pages on the BT site where they refer to 0845 numbers as non-geo local rate...
Such as here...

And i'm not a fool thank u v much! :P0 -
instead of using 0870 or 0845 numbers look on https://www.saynoto0870.co.uk for alternative numbersNo Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

Just thought I'd give an update...
When I checked my bank account online this morning, I realised that ASDA had put in a refund that was equal to double the cost of the six cartons!! But they haven't been in touch to tell me that's what they were doing
So, a good outcome anyway.
By the way, it's fair enough to debate whether 0845 and 0870s are charged at local and national rates, but the main issue - for me anyway - is that if you have a set-up where you can get your geographical numbers free or at 4p, this doesn't include the non geographical numbers. So therefore, it makes sense to try not to use them/find alternatives if possible. That money talks
I won't deny.
I heard it once,
It said "Goodbye"0 -
Well thanks for the comments! I understand that you're trying to resolve the situation cheaply but I was making the point that, rather than stress about a refund over time, it would be quicker to call the store (I'm sure the receipt you have also has the stores local number on it as well) and that, in all fairness, a local rate call isn't too much to pay when you're due a refund. I just think in the scheme of things, spending £x on a shopping then refusing to spend 'only' 3.5p on a call to resolve it, which they'd no doubt refund, is taking things too seriously.
If you have checked my post, good on you, I've mainly posted in the call centre topics, as I've been employed in one in the past so have experience I can use to give info. I don't have credit cards, mortgages, a car etc therefore have no need to post in this. I have experience in law so have put info on that. One thing that you have picked up on is my (partial) dissaproval of saynoto0870. Whilst it is a good idea in principle, more often than not the numbers provided on the site are useless and get you to the wrong department that can do nothing to help and increases the waiting time for the next called. However, that's going off topic so I'll stop.0 -

I simply must respond to this.
The cost of calling an 0845 number is NOT 3.5 pence. Typically such numbers lead to call-steering systems, and you spend many minutes on hold, at your expense. Those 3.5 pence per minute mount up: it is very unusual that a call to such a number costs less than a pound altogether.
As for saynoto0870, yes, it would be better for everyone if all the numbers that it gives were accurate. However, if it leads to people seeking alternatives to 0870 numbers and thus causing inconvenience for company management, I hope that it will lead companies to provide geographic contact numbers.0
