I would be surprised if you could get a custom fit gum shield on e bay. Custom fit implies they are made for the individual so unless the practitioner has them at chairside to take the appropriate measurements and impressions I dont see how it CAN be custom. Also these mouthguards mentioned here are not sports gum shields they are usually known as splints. These splints are not made of the same materials as a gum shield. Some can be similar ... but not the same and as a consequence the lab fee is much higher. If you are going to have a splint made for a diagnosed problem the best people to prescribe, manage and monitor the use of such devices are the professionals.

Mine was about £80 3-4 years ago and is still in daily use. I did stop using it for a while as I didn't have any jaw pain and managed to chip my front tooth  (I have now had 3 small chips out of my front teeth). I can't afford to get this chip repaired but I use the splint EVERY NIGHT to prevent pain and any unsightly/costly chips :A I also keep thinking I'm almost 30 now and my teeth will be in an awful state by the time I hit old age if I don't use it.
    Making small changes everyday....
  • The impression kit is sent to you with full instructions on how to use it, the impression is then sent back to the lab who make the splint. It is so much cheaper to do it this way. Dental costs are so so expensive, especially when on a tight budget anyway.

Have a look - they are great products

    These are SPORTS MOUTHGUARDS only.

It says that on the ebay listing and in no way claims to be suitable for teeth grinding problems or anything else that only a dentist can diagnose and treat.

I've just had a mouthguard made for me by my dentist who is NHS and private. It was cheaper to go private at £70. If you are definitely grinding it is well worth having a mouthguard - I've damaged my teeth a lot by grinding and if had been caught a bit sooner my teeth would be in better condition now.

If you find your dentist abrupt can you not ask to see another one at the practice? It makes such a difference finding a dentist you are comfortable with. Going to the dentists is stressful enough without being treated by someone you dislike.

    Good luck with it :)
