Scratched Wrought Iron Bedstead in need of love!

Hello,
I have just come into possession of a beautiful victorian wrought iron bedstead. However it has quite a number of scratches and scrapes along it as well as the odd' very small, patch of rust and could do with an overhaul to make it lovely again.
I wash thinking a clean up and spray paint (after dealing with my other baby - my little Ka) would do the job, but would I be desecrating an antique!!
Any tips would be most greatfully appreciate..
