I was having a downer aabout money, a few days ago.
I worked out that if I went back to my old job full time as a coach driver (48 hours per week), by the time I factored in my return daily journey, (52 miles to the depot), childcare, and extra food costs, as I wouldn't be able to cook as I do now, I would be better off by no more than £300.00 per month.
And that would be out of a take home pay of around £1200.00 per month:eek:
It's just not worth working all those hours, making the kids miserable, as I would hardly be at home, and all the stress that goes with the job, to end up with that money left.
Just take the redundancy as a lovely sign, you will manage, and you will have a lovely time rearing your own children.
Oh and that's not to say that I am against mothers who do work. I admire you for your stamina working full time. I do work part time, but in the evenings.0 -
Hi
I agree with thriftlady & katieowl. Looking after home & family frugally can be a full-time job. There might not be any actual income but you can certainly make sure the outgoings are much less.
Look at it another way, for ever £1 you earn, you have to pay a certain amount of it in tax. But every £1 you save is a whole £1, so is actually worth £1 plus the amount of tax you would have paid on it!!!!
Once you have done the costings of what your job was actually costing you, you could even find yourself better off - definitely not as much worse off than it initially appears.
If you have ever read the Complete Tightwad Gazette by Amy Daczyzyn (sp?) she goes into this in a lot of detail, and explains it all far better than I can.0 -
I agree with everything said about the costs of working. I seriously thought about going back to work last year when DD started school but with the strange hours DH works we would have to pay out for all kinds of childcare and you cannot find childcare for a 12 year old with AS. I worked out that even working 25 hours a week if I found a job that fitted in with school hours, with the loss of CTC, childcare costs (holidays and all those blooming inset days, days when the kids are sick. etc etc we would end up £300 PER YEAR better off!
DH agreed that it wasn't worth it.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things

I'm always reviewing what I do. Sometimes it may be small things like this week I've made up a bottle of diluted stardrops and water which I'm using for cleaning the kitchen sides rather than neat stardrops on the cloth. It also pays to nose around shops you might not normally consider - you'll be amazed at what you'll find out. Sometimes more expensive shops have cheaper prices on things than the cheap shops. Stay openminded!
