Talk Talk/Tiscali Debt???

Basically, I used to live my with parents and use the Tiscali internet service while I was there. When I moved out, approx May 08 I cancelled it, as I moved in with my partner.

Since then I have moved in with her in a place of our own. When taking a look at the banking service, I spotted they were still billing me for the direct debit, and cancelled the instruction immediately.

It is then when the trouble started. I have recieved numerous texts and letter. One such letter basically saying they had traced me down to my new address.

I have ignored them thus far, but its really starting to become a problem. The latest text saying "Please contact B Carter Solicitors, giving XXXX reference". The texts and letters before that said "please contact Fredricksen International quoting XXX"

What should I do here? I am pretty much unable to make many (if any phone calls) as I work full time (unless I can call after hours.)

I have no proof of cancellation, I just presumed the matter was put to bed??!

Please help

Presuming is the problem with cancellations. The fact the DD was still going means it was still active not that they had forgot to stop billing you.

Generally you need to cancel in writing giving 30 days notice and is usually a good idea to give them a call about it as well. You will get a final bill that needs to be paid and then that is the end of it. No final bill generally means its not been cancelled, even if you get no bill you usually get an acknowledgement of cancellation.

What you should have done in rung them up, askign wh are they still taking money for a service you cancelled. By stopping payment on what is to them an active account you went into arrears, default the account (credit record damaged for 6 years) and subsequently debt collection agency. B Carter and Fredrickson Int. are all notorious debt collectors that chase you by any means possible.

If you did write to them, do you atleast have a copy of the letter? Can you ring up Tiscali and ask to see what notes are on your account as you had already asked to cancel?
Or did you cancel but forget you will still in a contractual period so still had payments left to make?
I would try and tackle this with Tiscali first,
As to debt collectors for now see if you can work with Tiscali if not send the debt collectors this letter - http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showpost.html?p=11570893&postcount=2
Tiscali should be one when your back from work, as ot debt collectors never ring only write to them, they lie alot.

But the problem lies in you have no proof of cancellation, if they go for a CCJ they will probably win.

There are two ways of constructing a software design: One way is to make it so simple that there are obviously no deficiencies, and the other way is to make it so complicated that there are no obvious deficiencies

Sorry I don't have any advice to offer, but I do sympathise. A similar thing happened to me when I tried to cancel internet service with Tiscali a few years back (2008). Although they swore to me that the account was closed and satisfied on three separate occasions over a 4 month period and had even cleared the account number from their systems (apparently), I still received letters from them saying I owed money. The last I heard was in October 2008 when they said it had been sent to credit control for 'cancelling within contract period' (which it wasn't) and would take 60 days to resolve. After shouting at a supervisor he said he'd send me a notification when it was resolved...and nothing since.

If you ask me, they are a bunch of bullying cowboys who don't know their ar5e from their elbows.

It was all cancelled over the phone, nothing more was thought of it.

My missus did the same thing slightly before it no problem, so I did the same.

If they check the usage, they will see its hadnt been used for months after my so called cancellation.

Had a letter on Friday, from the solicitors. Quite threatening
