Barclays Job Rejection.

Please can SOMEBODY tell me why it is so hard to get a job in a bank these days as even a Customer Advisor?

I have just received a job rejection from Barclays following an online job application I made for a Customer Advisor role. Obviously, I am feeling very low and disheartened about this, and have emailed them back asking for feedback as to why I was turned down.

So has anybody here had similar trouble trying to get a job in a bank? It would at least be some comfort to know that I am not on my own in this job frustration.

As regards my previous experience - well, I have over 20 yrs admin experience, although this has not been in a bank. Do you think then that this may have gone against me, as I know banks expect their staff to have good selling skills and work to targets.

Ok. First thing first. Not to dishearten you too much. I always suggest that you should get practice on filling the application form online or even a cv. It should be tailored towards the job.

You have most likely been rejected as you have not tailored your experience to this position.

First tip! The customer advisor role in a bank is no longer an admin job. It is a sales job! So that is your first tip.

Second tip! It is also a face-to-face role and questions your experience in dealing with angry customers etc.

    Third! Team player etc.

Finally, just for your reference. Even if the job is advertised on the bank website or through a job agency, you will be surprised that no position is available! Yes! Surprise, surprise!

So continue to apply and apply. Alot of people are out of work. It is crazy. It will get worse under this government.

Also, thank you to people who help me out.

Hi there. Thank you for your advice re. my Barclays job rejection. Your comments were much appreciated and have been taken on board.

What I hate about a lot of these companies is that they never tell you exactly why they turned you down, and often you have to chase them up for feedback, and even then you sometimes don't get acknowledged. I have honestly never known blacker times than these in regard to unemployment. I thought the eighties were bad, but I think this recession is the worst ever!

You are so right when you say that the unemployment situation in this country is absolutely crazy. I live on Merseyside, where it has always been bad for jobs, and am applying to all the big companies, as well as many smaller ones. But I am very lucky to get a reply. My constant unemployment is making me feel extremely despondent, and I keep thinking I am NEVER EVER going to get out of this depressing rut. I have thought of relocating, but then the problem of finding suitable accommodation crops up. Catch 22.

Anyway, thanks again for your advice.

it could be quite simply that someone else who has had experience working specifically in financial services got the job. I do the admin part of recruiting and therefore go through alot of applications, even though we barely advertise, there is huge response and looking at the people who apply there are many with exceptional ability all going for one job.

a lot of these companies is that they never tell you exactly why they turned you down,

The job market is very competitive at the moment, with a lot of people going for one job (You maybe saw a news story recently that university graduates on average compete with 69 other people for each job for which they apply). It may be that ten very qualified, very experienced people went for this job, all being very capable of doing it. But the job can only go to one person - the rest get rejected - perhaps you were very capable of this job, but someone you wer eup against just had the edge for whatever reason.

All you can do is keep applying, applying, applying and doing your absolute best. When it comes to job interviews, 90% of success is down to your experience, your qualifications, the quality of your CV, your interview skills etc, etc - and you should definetly refine those as much as possible. But the fact remains - 10% is just down to pure luck. The only way you can beat that is by applying to as many jobs as possible.
