HATE new job - probationary period

I've been doing my new job for 4 weeks now, it's working in a quiet shop and along with other factors in my life, its making me depressed.

Not only am I working 6 day weeks on NMW with no weekend (I was employed as a part-timer) it's also mind numbingly boring, on my own all day and I can't cope with it. I know people can switch off and carry on doing jobs like this but for some reason I can't, I actually feel like screaming whilst there.

I would much rather be rushed off my feet all day than spend all day clock watching and trying to find things to do. I'm on a probabtionary period of 3 months.

I'm looking for jobs and researching careers but feel really bad for the people who employed me. If I find something good I feel like I would take it, and I've only been there a month. Is that wrong?

    Nope, not wrong at all.

To my mind, probationary periods aren't just for employers to see if they like the employee - they're also for employees to see whether you like the employer/job.

No, you spend for too much of your life at work for it to be miserable.

Although I would say try and stick it out until you find something else.

    Good luck!!

To be honest as they are messing you around with hours and paying you the lowest amount they possibly can and still be legal they don't care about you so I'd have no problems with getting another job. There will be plenty of people with some retail background who will be able to fill your role in an instant so I doubt they will worry if you leave. Retail generally has a high staff turnover, don't worry about it.

On the other hand, as they seem to be really quiet, perhaps that's all they can afford?

On this occasion they could afford more but they are paying a normal retail wage, I can't argue with that... but that's not what I'm bothered about. I would take less (its not possible..but if it was) if it meant I was happy.

Funny thing is they are advertising for another member of staff and they haven't had that many applicants. Makes me slightly mad because there are plenty of people on the dole here.

In my contract (which I haven't signed yet) it says I have to give 1 months notice. Does this apply whilst in my probationary period?
