Help! Black Icing for cake

I am making a newcastle united birthday cake for my daughters 18th next week but her party is this saturday.
I have no problems making the cake but I need some black icing to pipe her name etc.
I cant find any in the supermarkets in a tube, any other colour but black. So I have bought some black colouring and thought about making it but have since read various things saying it may look grey rather than black.
Can any of you clever ladies or gentlemen of course, let me have some tips on how to make some black icing please?

If you are local to the aforementioned football team, there is a cake dec shop in Whitley Bay - they would be worth a phone call.
If all else fails - black liquorice laces could be cut/curled/formed - depending on her name obviously!0 -

Sainsburys sell tubes of "designer icing" for £1.29, they do have black online.
Or you can get it on ebay..

Thanks for your suggestions.
Whitley Bay is just over 30 miles from me and I can't drive. But I like the idea of black liquorice laces. Daughter has her own sense of humour and wants her cake to say Happy 18th Birthday Wor Kid. Lol.
mz_grim thanks for taking your time and looking but I really dont think I can have anything delivered and know it will be here on time, I would be on tender-hooks.0 -
hayley11, I saw that weeks ago selling it at sainsburys, I have treid the local ones several times but never in stock. I rang them both this morning.0

Tesco sell sets of Dr Oeteker (sp?) writing icing in tubes - you'd have to buy several colours you don't need but the box does include black.0

Hi
I know I live in Liverpool, but Asda usually do their own version of 4 tubes of colour - there are 2 styles, primary and pastel colours if memory serves me right. The primary colours are red blue, green and black. Under £2 as well.I got there - I'm debt free and intend to stay that way. If I haven't got the cash, it doesn't get bought. It's as simple as that.0 -
Hi
I made fairy cakes at halloween with piped "webs" made with black icing. I just mixed the glace icing up in the usual way but added the food colouring before the water. That way I made sure it didn't get too runny. I also used a food bag as my piping bag - fill a corner of a food bag with a couple of dollops of the made-up icing and when ready, snip the very corner of the food bag off with scissors.
You need quite a lot of food colouring to get really black icing but it looks perfect. Be careful though because it dyes your skin!
(Who knows what it does to your insides!)

Hi Karen:j
good luck with the cake!As this has dropped down the pages of Old Style, i popped it over to I wanna to see if you get any more helpful responses
Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Thanks for all your replies, thankfully I have it solved now.
Its rather a cheats way, but it works
Betty Crockers chocolate flavoured frosting in a tub and added the black colouring. As the frosting was already a dark colour it has turned out really black, and chocolate tasting! After mixing in the colouring I put it into the fridge to set a bit before piping.
Thanks again for all help.0
