I came across this site last week, it's had a lot of attention from style spotters thestylerawr. It's called PurpleShmurpleShoppe , the owner handbakes fashion necklaces bracelets and earrings that look good enough to eat! Some of it makes me think of the new Katy Perry video
U.K. Postage costs are more than reasonable, starting at $2.50. my sis ordered 6 pieces at the weekend and only paid $5 shipping

Assuming this is an American site as it's in $, am I right in thinking you'd have to pay customs duty on top of postage? We ordered a 'cheap' DVD from US amazon once and ended up paying an additional £20 tax when it arrived. Not sure what the threshold is though, perhaps someone else could clarify?

I think the allowance in value of goods before you pay customs is around £30, I'd probably keep it to $40 per parcel to be on the safe side. My sis asked for her order to be split into two packages and they were happy to oblige. You could also ask for it to be marked as a gift too. At the end of the day, customs will pretty much do what they like anyway :( It's pretty disgusting really that postal customs allowances have stayed the same for years despite all the price hikes in goods.
My sis made an order Sunday, the items have been handmade and shipped out today. The owner estimates that they will be with us around monday of next week :)

I'd be very wary, I bought a bottle of perfume that we couldn't source here, I was charged £20 extra when it arrived in the UK, this had to be paid to Royal Mail before they would deliver.
Dan_BullDGreen.gifImport VAT on goods over £18.

Separate to customs duty you’ll also need to cough up 15% on goods costing £18 and more (including shipping charges), or if you can prove the item’s a gift, the threshold's £36. It’s important to understand the VAT is on the full amount, not just the excess over the limit.

HMRC deems it a gift if: it's from an individual to an individual, is for the private use of you or your family, there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly.

    Dan_BullDGreen.gifCustoms clearance charges.

When shopping online from the UK, if there are duty and/or VAT charges, the delivery company will pay this on your behalf and reclaim the funds from you before delivering your parcel, plus charge a handling fee on top. Fees vary depending on the company; but usually are between £8 and £14. These can be charged at a later date so watch out and be careful.

Wow, didn't realise the limits were so low! I've usually had no problems getting things online from the USA. I usually do ask for things to be marked up as a gift though or I'll ask for them to declare the value as being lower than it is.
Thanks for the info tho, I'll be cutting and pasting that for future reference :)

By asking them to put the value as being lower than it actually is - you and the company are actually committing fraud. I would be very careful.

If you like this sort of thing and don't want to pay excessive custom charges, there are plenty of people in the UK you can buy from. Have a search for polymer clay food charms/jewellery in the UK :)

Customs have the right to open any parcel they want (although in practice only a fraction of the parcels coming into the country get caught for fees I imagine) to check the contents match the customs declaration, so if I was a company sending out I personally wouldn't lie on the declaration, lol!

My daughter has been caught out twice by this now, it's a shame but the things she buys cannot be sourced in this country, forcing her to take pot luck with customs!

No, this is wrong, sparky61 has the correct information in post 4 copied from the HM excise q&a!
