Now this is totally not OS but you can get huge cakes in Costco for £10. :T It will easily feed 20 people with room for 2nds. They will decorate them for you or you could get a plain iced one and finish it off yourself. It has the frosting type icing though.
I'll run away now before the hard core OSers get me :smileyhea0 -
do you not have a bowl? a wooden spoon? I'd mix it up seperately rather than in a breadmaker and you can't cook it in a breadmaker because the shape won't be right!
Can you not ask a neighbour for a cake/roasting tin?
I'm a novice cake decorator and I use ASDA's ready to roll icing with is 48p a packet, usually I use about 4/5 boxes for an 8" cake but thats because I do the icing really thick so that I can get a straight iced cake to decorate.
Here's a selction of cakes I've done!

ASDA do plain iced cake that are oblong for their picture cakes at about £8.99
Marks and spencer, Tesco and Asda do round iced fruit cakes that have royal icing around the edge - their about £17-20 for a medium fruit cake that will feed 24 people

Can I third (or is it fourth) the Costco cakes idea, you could always just buy a plain cake from them and ice it yourself so you've done something towards it.
As far as making it in advance goes, unless you can get your icing covering completely airtight I'd make it with as little time to go as you can otherwise you run the risk of it wandering off to the party by itself (Well alright nowhere near that bad but it might go a little stale)! I would only do it on Thursday but then I'm rubbish at icing!
For my mum's 60th I baked a cake and a bunch of buns and my friend helped me to ice it (as I say I'm rubbish at icing) we put on some ready rolled icing straight on top of the cake. The took a bit of extra icing (either buy extra or use the trimmed bit) coloured it purple, rolled it out and cut a 60 out of it (cut round a piece of paper in the right shape). Then plonked it on the cake! It was surpringinly effective. You can always bung on as many candles as you dare without creating fire risk so that the simplicity appears intentional! :-)Comping, freebieing and trying to pay the mortgage off early!0 -
I'm afraid I'm going to have to recommend Costco too... we got one of their cakes for my daughter's birthday - she had 30 children there, plus about 10 or so adults and we still had enough to last us another few days! They really are excellent value, and the personalisation is free, you just have to book a couple of days in advance I think.:D0

Just had a thought, Tesco and Asda here do the "photo on a cake". The cakes can be bought without the picture on for about £10 nice cake big enough for 20 i would think.
You could always put a photo on if you wish (they have even put a picture from a book on for me before!).
