12 CD Interchanger equiv. for your car for under £100!!

Hi,

I’m sure someone’s probably done this already but I’ve found a way of getting the equivalent of a 12 CD interchanger for almost any car (that has a cassette player) for under £100!

What you’ll need are the following;

· An MP3 player that takes a USB Memory Pen (I’ve used the Lexar Jumpgear priced at £28.76 at https://www.flash-memory.co.uk
· A USB memory Pen (I’ve used a 1 GB Lexar Jumpdrive Sport 1GB (priced at £55.61) at the same site.)
· A Car Cassette Adaptor (I used one from Argos, but you can buy online at http://www.goaudio.co.uk/16613 for £10 inc. VAT)
· A PC with USB slot, your desired CD’s and a WMA or MP3 ripper (Windows Media Player is sufficient)

(P.S. I’m not condoning music piracy here – my assumption is that the music is taken off CD’s you’ve bought!)

Download your WMA or MP3 tracks onto the USB Jumpdrive sport. Pop it into the MP3 player, attach it to the audio input on the Car Cassette Adaptor and off you go

The number of tracks you’ll get on there will depend on various factors such as length of the track and quality of download (normally measured in kbps). 128 kbps is good enough for most people and MP3’s tend to be compressed better than WMA’s.

As an example “Goodbye Heartbreak” from the Lighthouse family at 128kbps is 4m11s long and takes up 3.83 MB. Based on this you can theoretically get around 260 tracks on the 1GB stick equating to about a dozen CD’s !!!

Advantages
· Twice as many CD’s as a 6 CD interchanger
· Much cheaper
· Change the order of the music or the tracks played whenever you want
· USB Pen drive may be used for data transfers as well
· MP3 player + USB Pen is smaller than a CD facia in your pocket (smaller than a packet of cigarettes)
· Solid state electronics so no scratched CD’s
· No chance of getting your CD’s stolen from the car

Disadvantages
· Requires some basic PC knowledge regarding WMA/MP3 ripping (although Windows Media Player is very intuitive)
· Requires a PC when you want to amend the tracks

Comments

  • Personally I prefer to have the ability to play MP3's integrated into my car stereo.

    700MB of MP3's per cd.
No hassle connecting everything together every time you get in the car

I have a goodmans gce7350 (or something like that) that I got from Argos for under £100.

With about 5CD's full of MP3's ripped from my cd collection, I've got more music than I need. Roughly 50 Albums worth.

There are loads of these MP3 capable car stereos around now.

I'm currently being tempted by one made in the states by a company called 8com. As well as playing MP3's it also has built-in bluetooth, and comes with it's own microphone so will act as a complete car kit when paired with your bluetooth enabled mobile phone. So the sound comes out your speakers and turns your stereo off when you get a call. Top!

Also it's just under £100 inc postage, although I'm not sure how duty would affect it.

No reliance should be placed on the above.
