Re SERPS, it's certainly worth having. My DH was never contracted-out into any occupational or private pension scheme. He gets state retirement pension plus SERPS: total £166.91 a week of which £84.25 is the basic state pension.
In addition, if he dies first I can inherit his SERPS (and he can inherit mine).
