Yes, I agree but we will always need scientists so why are they considered to be worth a lot less than bankers, lawyers etc.?0 -

It would be difficult, but can be done if you shop at the likes of Aldi, Netto, Home Bargains etcAsk me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies0 -

Because we'll need bankers and lawyers as long as we need scientists!
Most science projects need funding and banking brings in huge amounts of tax revenue. Lawyers... hmm... (some) Americans like to protect science discoveries you need lawyers for that. You've got to love the whole American Dream.0 -
If you have the academic gifts you say you have, how can you not understand even at 50k you cannot fund the lifestyle you want without making choices, thats what being a grown up is all about.
But good luck with the retiring at 40, anyway!Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0 -

3 people at 100 quid a week! Even with toiletries that is massive, the poster needs to get on the old styleboard and that could be cut to £60 fairly easily. The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0 -

Just wondering what you guys would class as a 'decent' salary? At the moment I'm 29, home-owner, single, and on £50,478 (plus £4,500 from lodger tax free) and to be honest I don't feel that well off at all. Seems all my money just disappears each month and don't have a lot to show for it.
So what do you lot think is a good amount to earn each year to feel well off because I always thought £50,000+ would be the sweet point
? I'm thinking maybe £75,000+ nowadays. I'm seriously considering moving back home for 2-3 years and renting my place so I can actually start saving some money...

OK so I take home about £700 from my job and another £200 ish from tutoring. £900 a month. S0 we're talking about £12K, yes? THAT'S a decent wage. I'd like more but hey.
Yes I am a single person, 33, have just bought a house. It's possible! To put it in perspective here's what I spend:
£300 mortgage, £80 shortfall on a house I own elsewhere that I let out, £90 council tax, £20 phone and broadband, £40 studio rent, £15 house insurance, £100 debt repayment to my mum and £100 debt repayment to my nan for the house deposit, £100 on food leaving about £50 for treats. (no car, I cycle 5 miles to work, no tv so no licence).
And I consider myself happy enough - I would love a bit more so I could have a holiday or buy some clothes - but generally I feel ok. I get down sometimes and I think I'm justified in that... getting down cos you're on £50K? Not justified! And I'm not even jealous cos it's just laughable.0 -

I would consider any wage that pays the bills decent. In this climate you can't be choosy.0 -
See, i see this as a bit lacklustered and unambitious. Not everyone is happy to consider that the minimum to live on is ok. Maybe its a bit of a middle class thing to want more, to try to push for the best you can get.DogTailRed2 wrote: »I would consider any wage that pays the bills decent. When I'm earning 50k (when, not if), i'm sure i'll think its not enough. Not when the price of a 3 bedroom house in a decent area will set me back 300k. If you've got some good qualifications behind you and are on a career ladder, it should be achievable0 -
I'd be more than happy on £20,000. I currently earn just under £12,000 and I manage so any more than that would make it more comfortable!0
