Cat pee'd on our mattress when she was ill, now can't get rid of smell!

HI

Well a few weeks ago Mindy wasn't well, was suffering with an infection (which is all sorted now thank goodness), but during that time she wet the mattress when she couldn't get up to go to the toilet.

We've tried washing it with simple solution over and over again, but the smell keeps coming back.
It's a fairly new memory foam mattress, and as you can see from my sig below, I can't afford a new one.
But the smell is aweful. I've seen something called nature's miracle, but it's not readily available over here. And i've also seen urine-off, but it's expensive and I don't want to get it if it's just going to be the same as Simple Solution.

Has anyone tried this or got any other methods to get rid of this? I'm worried that its fairly deep set now, but need to get it out ASAP.

thanks!

    Have you tried antibacterial fabreeze?

    Don't use anything solvent based.

Once you get rid of the smell, then get a breathable waterproof mattress protector.

Memory foam is very dense, and it very difficult to clean, and especially to dry. So don't take the potentially expesive risk of it happening again.

    HI

    Thanks atrixblue
Sorry it this seems like a blonde question - but never used bi carb of soda - because the stain is deeply set, should i soak the area, then just sprinkle the soda on? Will it get deep down?

    Hi

Tried fabreeze, but because its so deep in now, nothing seems to be penetrating it. I've used a whole bottle of simple in one go, and also a whole bottle of 1001 cleaner. But that smell (eewwww!!) just keeps coming back.

Don't soak the area if you can avoid it. Otherwise it will take forever to dry. And I doubt it is a two sided mattress that would allow you to use the other side.

True, it's a non turn memory foam mattress. We are away this weekend, so thought it might be the perfect opportunity. We've got guests at the end of the month, so really wanted to get rid of the smell. There's no stain, just the odour.

Does the mattress have springs, or is it the reflex foam/memory foam type. If it is the latter, then it will take a long time to dry. If you have to soak it, then when you go away, stand the mattress on it's edge in a well ventilated room.

If the other methods don't work, then try your local pet superstore, who may have a suitable product (just remember not to use solvents).

Thanks Tim - it's spring on the other side.
When you say solvents, what exactly do you mean? I was going to try the baking soda and vinegar, then when that dries, go over it again with a stronger solution of Simple Solutions. It seems to be the only product really out there.

If it contains springs, then it should dry quicker.

Most solvents give off a very pungent smell. The sort of smell that would make you high if you sniffed it too much. This would also include any petrolium based products, or anything that is highly flamable.

Antibacterial Fabreeze does work eventually, but it needs to be the antibacterial version.

    I've heard good things about this stuff - 'RX66 Bio-Enzymatic Sub-Surface odour digester' http://www.xeria.co.uk/kolist45/1/Pets/12/RX66HS.htm

It's a professional grade odour remover, they make products to deal with dead animals, bodily fluids etc so definitely have the odour pedigree!
