Need recommendations for fireplace and stove installation

Hello everyone, recently bought a multi fuel stove and have no idea on who to hire to get it installed.
Got a couple of very expensive quotes from two chimney sweeps who both offered fitting, coming in at £1400 and £1600  which I thought was pretty expensive!!
Is this a job that a builder can do or what sort of tradesman should we be looking for? The quotes we got included chimney liner, which is where the expense really started to build up as it was working out at about £100 a metre.
Pulled out an old, electric fire that had filled the fireplace previously so need the fireplace surround replaced and the brickwork re-plastered and in general tidied up as we are looking at bare brick at the moment.
Any recommendations or advice if this is a job we could do ourselves? We live in Dundonald.

Not sure if its really a job that you should be doing yourselves - I previously asked for advice on here about poor work done on a stove install in my house and was told to look for a hetas www.hetas.co.uk approved installer. You should note that stoves are subject to building controls and you will need building control consent before you can sell the house, which would be easier if it has been done by a appropriately qualified person (I believe they can self-certify). As an aside, stoves aren't really something i'd recommend messing about with, they can cause big problems with walls cracking, mortar falling out etc if they aren't put in right as the heat is pretty intense

We have been recommended by a builder friend to use John Coulter fireplaces.

    Hope this helps!
  • Thanks for your help everyone. As far as I know HETAS thetope, applies to just England, Scotland and Wales as when I went to look at the website and search for an installer, the postcode searcher applied to mainland postcodes only. I think the building control regulations are also a GB thing as well.
Have phoned round a couple of fireplace shops and they don't give names of installers unless you have bought the stove from them, which is frustrating but understandable I suppose.
Will look further into John Coulter Fireplaces arkonite_babe, thanks for the tip! :p
  • Hi pixiecheeks,
I have recently had 3 quotes to have a woodburning stove installed.
    1st, £2000
    2nd £2,200
    3rd £1785.00
all three prices include opening up the fireplace, skimming the walls inside the fireplace, the flue liner and chimney cowl, the slate hearth, and the stove. I hope this info helps you. Tony
  • HI Pixiecheeks,

ask for advice from The Stove Yard at Kiltonga on the Old Belfast Road between Newtownards & Dundonald .. we bought ours there but as it was going into a new house the plumber installed ours. I'm sure the Stove Yard could recommend someone .. they were very helpful when we were buying ours :)
