    Thanks for the reply geegee8

I know i dont know everything about computers:rotfl: but i have freinds who have been through the computer age from the atari days :rotfl:and so on and other stuff i have learnt from just reading up on,normally on the internet :)

Today i failed my theory test (which im not too pleased about as ive spent over 300 pound on 10 driving lessons) and the driving test is changing in october and arent paying way over the odds for insurance (ive had a reality check!!) :) 2700 pound a year to insure a 22year old fiesta with 150k on it thats a 1.1 :/ thats worth around 500 quid mark and plus another 1500 quid for lessons, tests and so on...
so... selling car, getting myself a little moped or 125 as insurance is around 300 pound, a year, not a month!:T and doing my CBT so i can still get around and get to college (just wondering about financial help tho) as nobody wants to set on someone for saturday work round where i live.
ive asked my local college about the course and also applied, told NHS that im not returning(due to) the above and also being called a !!!!!!!! and so on..
i do have one thing to say though
"school leavers for the past 2-3 year are not prepared for working in a real life situation" which dosent help...

    Thanks
    Rob

P.s yes i do still live at home with my parents but i would like my own transport (please nobody say public transport) as where i live it is an absolute nightmare! and plus i would like to just have that little bit of freedom too having my own transport really,is pretty much a requirement.

A scooter is a good idea, or if you can't stand the thought of a scooter then an Aprilia RS125, Cagiva Mito 125 are nice looking bikes. I had the Cagiva Mito 50 at 16yrs old and the Mito 125 at 17yrs old, loved it :D Altho, you have to look after them well otherwise they will break and be costly to repair.

Scooters are cheaper and easier to sort out usually, well, easier than a highly tuned two stroke 125.

    CBT is easy enough.

Financial help. EMA or ALG? I think they pay about £30 a week or something, depending on your age, circumstances, college course etc. What about evening shifts somewhere? Or offering your services in the local supermarket for computer repairs? Buying and selling computers that you repair yourself? Customising computers? Not sure what the market is for things like that, so you would have to have a look.

The fact is, if you want a decent job and future, then now is the time to work hard for it.. :)

Sorry about your theory test. Insurance is silly for young lads.

Okay, ALG - Adult Learning Grant - up to £30 a week based on last years earnings, did you earn much last year?

As you are 19 you technically have to pay the course fees, although I know that if you earn under £15,050, you should be entitled to 'fee remission' which you sort out when you go in to apply. This means you will have to pay the certification fee, usually £60 ish..

    Hope that helps.

    Hi
I agree -desktop computers at home or even in the work place will soon be just a cube shape'd box " like this here" - http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.caultex.co.uk/images/Shuttle.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.caultex.co.uk/index.cfm%3Ffuseaction%3Dcubes&usg=__JVphwKjNJGOjC5ia1N18wLhFf5w=&h=235&w=313&sz=15&hl=en&start=6&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=fNHqaS1ERqj8VM:&tbnh=88&tbnw=117&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dshuttle%2Bcube%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26sa%3DN%26rls%3Dorg.mozilla:en-US:official%26channel%3Ds%26tbs%3Disch:1

but big desktop computers are still needed eg - like certain types of servers, home based servers and so on... big desktop machines at home or work will be fazed out in a few years time and most will have laptops, people who need bigger computing power as file sizes become bigger as internet speeds go into GB/s (which for those who have access to a personal dedicated server with an un-metered line will know 1gbps download speed is a possibility. -people who have big file sizes of data will most likely still need a desktop machine (but it will no doubt be like that cube above) :rotfl:

reason for me having the computer i have is that i administer 4-5 different websites and forums, and have 3 dedicated servers in germany, canada and another in germany which i use for data storage, and running my computer now since i built it from scratch about 2 year ago and cost me around 1500 quid at the time and hasnt been turned off since its first switch on. aswell it also acts as a home server, as i have a few 2.0 and 2.5TB hard drives connected to my computer with everything the family needs as backup eg,music, dvds, pictures and so on.. as we were getting sick of" oh il just watch this, argh what?! where's the disc" - so just backup on hard drives, plus it acting as a home server protects anything or anyone else who connects to the router at home, as it scans for viruses and other harmfull stuff while its connecting to the router(which is all controlled by my machine)

I see what you mean about computer and laptop repairs - im always having to show my family members through different things, repairing their laptops - uncle's laptop had 162 million transistors on its motherboard, 4 of which had burnt out and needed replacing and re-soldering - which i did :)

and as for changing ram.. it dosent matter, so long as a computer does what you need it to do - is all that matters - i like tinkering, upgrading, and keeping everyone's computers running and running to the best speeds and making them reliable if they are begining to play up:rotfl:

im going to contact wakefield college later today (have my theory test at 1.30pm) when i get back im going to phone them about it.

Thanks for the support everyone :)
wish everyone a nice day :)

    Rob

You're obviously very very talented at what you do and it really does look like an area you should be getting in to. I suppose I'm looking at the long term picture of what the job prospects are, you are still young so you have plenty of time to go off and follow your dream but you could do even better if you have a rough plan for the next 3 or 4 years in place.

What you mention above about what you've built is a very specialist example and you will probably get very few jobs building or repairing that type of system. As before have a think about how you can use your talents commercially. For example you mention home servers but I bet within a few years we'll either all use very easy to admin boxes (mac mini style) or cloud services. Things are changing so rapidly now, only going back 5 years wifi routers weren't all that common and were a pain to set up so businesses had boxes and wires everywhere, that's now totally changed and will change again in 5 years.

Also - and don't take this the wrong way please - but that course looks very basic and I can't see anything it lists that would stand out to an employer. I think you'd really need a degree level course if your want a course with the potential to match your talent. By all means do that course but see it as a stepping stone to a degree course...it might even be worth looking at some degree courses now and see what their requirements are, you might be better off doing something like maths and physics than a very basic computer course.

I hope you don't mind what I've written. My thinking is with your skills and a degree you could go a very long way. My concern is that with a basic computer course and a niche in building computers that no one wants you'll end up competing against a lot of other people for basic PC support jobs and getting frustrated because you'll know more than is required but without the qualifications to progress.

Try not to get down. Bullies at work are just that, bullies, they are not better than you in any way.
I dont really know much about the job you've described but from what you've said maybe it would be best to look for a different job. I know theyre few and far between but you shouldnt be doing something that makes you feel so bad about yourself!
You need to remember that everyone is good at something, just like everybody is bad at something. It certainly doesnt make you stupid.
    Give yourself a break :)

Did I miss something, I have no idea where the OP was bullied, he was hired to do a job and is struggling to do it and the manager is telling him that he is underperforming.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!

    QUOTE]

By the OP's own admission, I don't think he is very academic, especially not to do Maths or Physics.

I do agree that looking into a degree qualification in computers could be worthwhile, seeing what you need and then aiming towards that .

I hope you don't mind me saying this but that really made me laugh, sounds like a scene from Chucklevision!

It sounds like what happens at the chocolate factory where my mum and dad work-it happens there with belts going too fast on a daily basis-its like water off a ducks back to them now, my mum used to stress but as it happens to all employees with certain managers she now laughs about it-no wonder there chocs are so expensive.

Sorry I don't have any helpful comments for the OP except don't give up you will find whats right for you, maybe working in a different factory? I have done mail sorting which was quite easy and glueing bits of foam together, order picking never appealed to me (then went on to be a teaching assistant and now doing an occupational therapy degree)
