How can I get a loan when on benefits

A few years ago I had to give up my job when I got sick. I now have to rely on benefits to support my family. My mobility is greatly reduced so I need a car to get around, also coupled with the fact that my missus takes care of my 83yr old mum who lives 45 miles away from us. Our old Mondeo blew up last week & now we`re stuck. I`ve tried to get a loan, that I can easily afford, but as we`ve had no debts, credit or credit cards for over 10 years & don`t owe anyone money I can`t get a loan. The only places that pretend to help are the rob-dogs that want an up-front fee of £70 then refuse credit (& I mean YesLoans who`ve screwed me over already).
I could get a car on the Motability scheme but that`ll cost me £200/month, which is all of my mobility allowance. Having two young children I can`t justify this, especially as I can get a car for under £1000.

Does anyone know of any reputable companies who might lend me a grand, without ripping me off, so`s we can get back on the road.

Why not just buy an old banger from the classifieds in your local paper?

Surely that will get you around in the interim until you can save up for something better?

Already thought of that. 2 reasons against.
    1. Have no spare cash as all bills just beeen paid
    2. Done it before & it died within a month. We clock up over 250 miles a week going to & from the old girls. We need something reliable.

Zopa listings might be worth a try. Given what you've said you should be a reasonable prospect for paying it back. It might be difficult for you on Zopa markets because the credit scoring is much the same as with the banks etc. but the listings are much more personal. You can set out your circs. and reasons for the loan just like you did on here. Have a good look around https://www.zopa.com, especially in the listings area. BTW, if you've not heard of it before, it's 'person to person' lending. Small amounts put in by lenders are aggregated to reach the full amount of the loan.

Don't forget that with a car on the motability scheme you have no tax to pay, no insurance to pay, no mot to pay, no breakdown cover to pay. You literally only pay for your fuel, they even pay for stuff if your car needs things doing to it. Yes its £200 a month but its totally reliable.

Thanks for the heads up, it was really useful. I got in touch with them & they could help me as long as I`ve got at least 3 years left on my Mobility allowance. I`ve only got 2 yrs 10 mths left on it so they can`t help.....typical isn`t it? Anyway, I spoke to the DSS & they`re going to give me an £800 budgeting loan, & I only have to pay back that amount, no interest, so I`ll be ok in a few weeks.

Glad to hear you got a budgeting loan, interest free isn't it? :)

Maybe you could do the HP thing when you get your net award.

You only have to have 1 year left.
