Moral Dilema: To tell potential employers about long holiday at interview or not?

So when things were good and we were both in a good financial position we decided to get married in Australia and have our honeymoon straight after. So we'll be in Australia from Saturday 18th December - Saturday 22nd January.

Things obviously didn't work out and now I'm hunting for jobs. Although interviews arn't coming as often as I'd like I now do finally have one for a job I'd like (good hours, good pay woo)

But do I tell them about the holiday during the interview? I know a good employer wouldn't worry too much about it, but I don't want to put them off. But then I guess if I tell them if I got the job it's probably worse!

Agrhh!

So would you tell people at interviews?

you might want to wait until you are offered the job, but before you formally accept it

Most employers will ask if you have any holidays booked anyhow. If they do, then you'll have to tell them. Just bear in mind if you don't tell them, and then spring it on them, you may not have a job to come back to...
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands

  • Unless they specifically ask you at interview I wouldn't volunteer the information until you are offered the position. If that happens I would say that you would love to accept, and then mention the holiday and ask if it is okay. Unless it is in a field that it extremely busy over Christmas they are unlikely to withdraw the offer I wouldn't have thought.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j

If you are offered a job you are going to have to tell them before you accept it, but be prepared for a less than favourable reaction. Most businesses will accept new staff may have booked a fortnight off, but that's almost a month's holiday. You would need to take 22 days holiday, which is more than most people's annual entitlement.

Thanks guys, I would be happy to take it as unpaid leave.

Just remembered that the interview I have is with a company that already know about the holiday (they asked on the application form) so I guess that means they don't care!
