forged signature 1st credit/bankruptcy

My partner pays an outstanding debt to 1st Credit, which his ex wife ran up on a credit card she set up by forging his signature.
We requested the orginial agreement and the copy of it show clearly it's not his signiture or writing.
When I confronted my partner about WHY were we paying it, he stated he didn't want to confront it or her.
I'm annoyed that there is still £4k outstanding and it's not his debt. He does not want to pursue legal action as 1st credit suggests. He worries it will open a whole load of issues with his ex.
He is then debating going bankrupt over it.
I work full time, my partner looks after the children and does not work!
I know this is long winded, but I don't know what to do and searching the net isn't helping me.

Hi Y,
Bankruptcy sounds extreme for £4K but, of course, I don't know your circumstances. Can he agree reduced payments - although that will impact his credit record I expect.
I don't see what options you have except to work this through with him - if you go to the police without his agreement I imagine he will go mad with you.
So sorry and all the best to you both.Debt at highest: £8k. Debt Free 31/12/2009. Original MFD May 2036, MF Dec 2018.0 -
You have a copy of the original signed credit agreement? (I take it you sent a subject access request to get this?)
Have you checked to see if it is properly executed and enforcable?
If the agreement was made before 6th April 2007 then you may be able to look at this. After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
Dad Gift 6k ¦ Savings & Inv Tst: £2,500
Loan 10k: £0 ¦ Dad 5.5k: £2,270 ¦ LTSB: £0 ¦ RBS: £0 ¦ Virgin £0 ¦ Egg £0
Total Owed: £2,270 (+6k) 11/08/20110 -

Bankrupcty isn't the only option. If he is not willing to go to the police then if the account is pre-2007 checking that the agreement is enforceable is definately an option.0 -
Thank you, I'm not too sure what i'm looking for, as the debt is pre 2007 (think it was 2000).0

Have a read of the first few pages of this thread: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/2532927
Although it will damage your OH credit file, it is not like bankruptcy. Though, he will have a default and have bad credit for 6 years. I'm not sure but you may need to separate out your finances.
You can always as questions on the above thread if you need specific information.0
