Second Job

I have an interview for a second job tomorrow evening in my local pub. Has anyone got any advice on taxation on a second job? What hours they work etc and how they find doing two jobs?

  • Hey Lisaflower!

I've recently got myself a second job in a bar and when i spoke to the tax office, they said that as long as the extra doesn't take you into the higher tax threshold you should still be paying 22% on what you earn.

    Hope this helps

  • Thanks. How are you finding working with two jobs?
  • It's fine, no problems at all but I do live within walking distance of both (even though I do drive sometimes!) and my full time job is sitting at a computer so is not physically demanding. How many hours are you hoping to do?

  • I'm pretty much the same. I live walking distance to both. I was thinking of doing about 12 hours a week extra.

Do you think that this is acceptable?
  • Easily! It's entirley up to the individual. I usually do 11 hours - 4 hours on a Thursday evening and 7 hours on a Sunday but this weekend alone I did 15! Not a problem at all I don't think. Plus you've got the added bonus of asking for more shifts if you need more cash and of course....tips! It never hurts to flirt slightly ;-) I made £17 the other night! :D

    Hi LisaFlower,
I have two small children and work part time 21hours over Weds, Thurs, Fri. It is about 30mins travel so it pretty much means I'm out of the house 8-5 these 3 days. My husband works full time and also a few nights a week as a delivery driver. we were still struggling to make ends meet-so i decided to get a job at a pub also. I start work at 8 (so its after the kids are in bed, so they dont have to know im gone). the pub is walking distance, so i only have to leave the house at 5 to 8!
the tax should be roughly the same percent for each job-as lazy&indebt says.

as far as me and my husband go-we promised each other wed both try to stick at our extra jobs for 6months, to try and clear our overdraft and maybe put some into savings. I am also looking for a christmas job to begin in a month or so, after our caravan is shut for the winter!
if you are looking for a temporary solution to raise extra money then you should look for a weekend/evening job in a shop maybe-just over christmas. it will save your evenings for yourself and you will be able to chill out when you get in from your first job, instead of getting changed shuvving a piece of tea down your throat and running back out!

have a think about it lisaflower, let us know how you go!

  • Don't forget the NI on top of the 22% tax which I believe is 7%

  • I've been doing 2 jobs for a couple of weeks now...

If I'm completely honest....I'm knackered lol.

I work Mon - Fri 9 -5 from home doing admin work, and work Saturdays for a mobile phone retailer.

I think part of my problem is the limbo that I'm in at the moment...I used to work for them as a Branch Manager, and I've gone back 5 months later. However they want me to go on a course before I can have my own log in for the tills (and they keep making them during the week - which I can't do). Which means I'm on £4.30 p/h + 65p p/h training suppliment. In the past two weeks, I've made nearly £50 commission....for someone else!

Ho hum...hopefully I'll hear about the training course soon...

  • I had a second job at a pub. I work mon-fri 9am-5am. I did two pub shifts a week on a tues and weds. The hours were 6pm-11.30pm. I should have come out with £25 per shift but came out with £20 after tax. The tips were good though (£3 was the minimum that i would get and that would pay for my taxi home).
It wasn't too bad for me as it was quite busy some nights so the time flies i would be knackered on the thursday but back to normal on the friday!
    good luck! ;)
