Can't open .doc file

I recently had to reboot my PC to factory settings (but the one that saves the data...somewhere!!) so I keep coming up against problems which I have sorted in the past but can't remember how to solve them!!
I have been sent a file which is a .doc file but when I try to open it it says that I need to set the association type to open it. Only problem is that when I go into the set assocation place on PC, there is no '.doc' showing so that I can change it to open using my OpenOffice org which is what I would normally use (actually come to think of it, I am probably going to have to install that again)
So questions are
* - where is the .doc
* - can I change that to opening in OpenOffice and if so will I need
to re-install that again
* - Do I just google to get the software for the OpenOffice
And also, as mentioned I re-booted but saved my data, but I can't find it anywhere. Apparantly it should be in the 'C Drive/Backup' but when I click on the C Drive and then look in the backup folder there is just loads of stuff that I don't understand.
Any help would be much appreciated from anyone even if you only know the answer to some of my queries!!!
Dunno if relevant but I have Vista and run AVG every day.
Thank you in advance:T

Sounds like you had previously told windows not to hide the file extensions. It does this by default, which is pretty stupid.

Next, yes you need open office installed to be able to open files in open office...

As for the backed up stuff, I never use windows to do that for me so I don't have a scooby. If it's a load of files that look nonsense, you probably have to restore them using a specific tool in windows. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Thanks weegie.geek
