16 Yr old work trial Help please

Hi I am posting for some advice for a friend of mine,
Her daughter is 16 and has just left school, she had been looking for a summer job and came across a small restaurant wanting part time staff,
She applied for the vacancy of waitress and was asked to come in for a trial run on a Saturday,
After working from 10am-5pm she was thanked and went home assuming she would hear from them as they said they would call her.
(For the record, she was not told to go for a lunch break and managed this shift on a few glasses of water, but being 16 she was none the wiser as to what she was entitled to, until she came home).
This was about 3 weeks ago now and she has not heard anything from the restaurant or been paid for the 7 hours work she has done.
My friends partner drove down tonight with their daughter and spoke to the manager who abruptly told him that they do NOT pay for TRIALS and that was the end of it.
They obviously came home a little angry and have been left feeling a little upset by the way at which their daughter had been exploited when she was not told it would be an unpaid trial.
Could someone give me some advice so that I can pass this on as they are a little upset and I said I would message here for any help.

hard lesson learnt I think, did she ask if it was a paid trial? The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!

I dont think it enterred her mind, at 16, I think she assumed it would be,
Is it legal to do that though, seems a little unfair really especially for a youngster wanting to get the job, not paying her or even calling back to say she was unsuccessful.Googlewhacker wrote: »hard lesson learnt I think, did she ask if it was a paid trial?Thriftkitten

Most trials are unpaid.... but they should have made that clear .... and I'd have thought 2-3 hours would have been enough of a trial.
Name and shame!0 -
Sounds rough! I know the jobcentre's do things called work trials where the job centre pays, but at 16 she would be too yound to sign on anyway, Does seem harsh - as stated before what did the employer state at the start?0

Name and shame maybe phone up and make a booking for a party of 20 then on the day say that you found out from a friend how they treat their staff and cancel the booking ;o))))0
