Dyeing a Bridesmaid Dress?

I wasnt intending on having any bridesmaids or flowergirls but that has totally changed and I am not having 5, yes FIVE flowergirls, and also pageboys too (yes I have gone mad).

Thing is, I am from a big family but I always said I would have my youngest sister as a bridesmaid and I am seriously considering this although I can't really afford it. Because I am strapped for cash a friend has very kindly given me a bridesmaid dress that she wore to her sisters wedding and was going to put on ebay and told me to do what I want with it to make it fit in every way for my wedding! I would need to dye it, it is currently a gorgeous burnt orange colour but this wouldn't fit my colour scheme and would like it to be black. I think the material is raw silk.

Does anyone know how easy this would be to dye and how I would go about it? I don't want to ruin a gorgeous dress but at the same time I don't want to introduce yet another colour to my theme!

TIA

if it's pure/raw silk this should be great to dye, especially a darker colour that it's current. However, you may find the lining is polyester and this doesn't dye particularly well at all. Personally I think it's a job for the professionals.

Thanks Linda, wasn't sure about trying it myself as I don't want to mess it up! Might take it to the woman who's altering my dress for a bit of advice and see how it goes, you never know she might even volunteer to do it for me! hehe
