I bought 2, they are supposed to be the gold variety "ready to eat, ripened in the field" or whatever. Mine appeared to be very unripe, pale and tasteless. Lidl refunded me courteously, without quibble (I am a very regular customer at that branch).

I have had their 49p pineapples in the past - were perfect in the past.

They had some very good Del Monte extra large pineapple a week ago, they were fine.

999/1000 the produce I buy at Lidl is perfectly good.

Wife got two of the Del Monte ones for 49p each on Thursday so I went back on Friday and they were a different brand and 1/2 the size but still only 49p.

The unripe ones were indeed another brand, not Del Monte. The thing is they look ripe, but apparently (and I'm no expert) the only way to tell if a pineapple is ripe before purchase is to sniff the stalk/leaves and see if they smell pleasant. Once opened, a pineapple that is unripe will not ripen afaik, but some say that a pineapple with the stalk left on will ripen when the stalk sends starches or sugars to the plant at some point. Some suggest leaving the pineapple in a brown bag to ripen (why brown? no idea). The 2 I bought were completely unripe, possibly a week or two away, the flesh beige, tasteless, quite dry.

One way to check if a pineapple is ripe - is If you can pull a leaf easily out of the middle section of the top of the pineapple
