help - wonga.com has took money out of my account twice! what can i do?
Options
hello all.
regarding wonga, i really need some help at the moment as THEY HAVE TOOK £77.29 (in two payments) OUT OF MY ACCOUNT TWICE.
i registered at the back end of may and have used them 4 times since - just for 2 x £20 loans and 2 x £40 loans.
one thing i noticed when they took the repayment out of my bank account for the first (£20) loan I took was that it didn't show up on my online bank statement straight away and took a few days to. i wasn't too concerned at first but now it's caused me a big problem.
the first 3 times i loaned money (1 x £20 loan, 2 x £40 loan) they took the money out of my account on the agreed date and i received the confirmation text and email from them to say so and checked my account and the money had definitely left my account.
however, in the case of one of the £20 loans (paying back £25.75) and the £40 loan (paying back £51.54), on the day these repayments appeared on my statement (a week later for the £51.54 payment!) THEY TOOK THIS MONEY OUT OF MY ACCOUNT AGAIN! even though i had already paid it on the agreed date. i knew exactly what was in my account and that amount (£77.29 total) was missing and only wonga could have took it.
i called them up as soon as i realised expecting them to say it was a mistake and that i'd be refunded and couldn't believe it when they said they had nothing at their side to say they had took the money out twice. they said that i had paid on the agreed date and that sometimes it takes a few days to show up on my bank statement but they hadn't took they money out twice and to prove it basically.
i contacted my bank and they said that wonga had took the money out but said they couldn't have took it out before because it didn't show up on my statement, BUT I KNOW THEY DID TAKE IT OUT! how can i prove this? how the hell can they just take the money out again in the first place?!
thing is, i was due to pay back the last loan i had with them (£45.50 total) just yesterday and part of the money i had in my account was to repay it, but as wonga has took that money out of my account again it meant i didn't have enough money in there to pay them and now owe them an extra £15, even though it was their mistake.
i'd never used anything like this before so this is all new to me. i really don't know what to do or how i can prove they took the money out of my account twice so would really appreciate any help and advice here.
thanks in advance.

Have to admit that this doesn't make sense to me. Your bank statement is evidence of incomings and outgoings from your account. If the bank state the moneys haven't been taken out, then they haven't else it would appear on your statement.
The only way forward on this is to obtain a statement, clearly marking where the duplicate entries are shown and get a copy of this to Wonga for clarification.0 -
thanks for your reply.
exactly - it doesn't make sense, but i swear - the two repayments were took out of my account on the agreed dates (there was about 5 days inbetween them) and nothing appeared on my bank statement straight away, then when both repayments did appear on my bank statement on the same day some days later (about a week for the first of the payments), they definitely took the money out again.
they said on the phone themselves it sometimes takes a few days for repayments to show up on your bank statement. why they don't instantly, i don't know. you'd expect they would.
i'm praying that this extra money money being took out will show up on my account soon as that will be my proof they have took the money out of my account twice. otherwise ... ?0 -
Who do you bank with. Different banks operate Direct Debits slightly differently, especially over a weekend.
For example my RBS account will show Direct Debits on a Sat morning that are due out on a Monday.
If it is two direct debits it will take a few days to sort everything out. However, the first thing you could do is check your account under the direct debits section and see what mandates are on your account. Its possible that you will have two direct debits showing for Wonga.0 -
How do you know Wonga took the money out twice? I take it the balance is £77.29 lower than it should be
Are you actually looking at the balance in the account or the funds available? The balance will have to have been made up from all the ins and outs on your statement, and the second entry would definately be shown on your statement
However, sometimes a bank will 'reserve' some money in your account to pay an upcoming direct debei / cheque etc. This will mean that the funds available will be lower than what is expected from your statement until the direct debit is paid. Sorry if that doesn't make sense!
If it is just the funds available that is incorrect, then it should fix itself within 24 hours.
I would advise that you wait and check again at 9.30am tomorrow morning (normal office hours) to see if it has fixed itself. If not, ring the bank again to specifically ask why you are £77.29 down but it's not showing on your statement (don't mention Wonga - let them work it out)
