Generic DDR-2 RAM (2X512) quiet cheap on Eclipse, everywhere else above £50.

Always avoid generic ram is the general rule unfortunately (as often it will stop working, not work as you expect and so on - which costs more in the end).

If buying ram but not wanting to spend lots generally Crucial and Samsung tend to be good.
  • Utter nonsense. Generic ram is fine as long as you dont push the barrier as you may do with more reliable brands. I've been using them for years without issue. In fact, my current 'generic' ram consists of several chips bearing the Samsung name!

    Good find!

Buying generic RAM is a lottery. You may be getting a stick built using chips from a quality manufacturer and have no problems whatsoever. On the other hand you may get something built using chips that failed "company A" quality control but not "company B" and, like you say, only works in unstressed applications.

For extra stablilty and piece of mind, I'd always recommend paying a little more and buying branded memory. I always use Crucial.
  • I am needing 1GB ram and I have to say that buying cheap aint the best idea. The market for ram is very boyant and you need to keep an eye on crucial for lowering prizes. If you find cheaper in pc world or another computer shop then fine - if it doesnt work you go back and they replace it. Stick with samsung, kingston, corsair and crucial ram

    I bought it!

These are marked 'specTek' , the specTek web site is similar to other makes (selector and all) and they work fine no problem.

The price now went up to £60 , the service was ok, nothing special, delivery was very slow.

  • I cant recommend Eclipse at all. Messed me about something chronic after they got my money. This was a year ago and they might be better now. They told me everything I ordered was out of stock right after they cashed my card. They also charged VAT on postage and they will charge you money to return an item by saying they cant find any fault.
