Im not an expert but I used up a jar of pesto last week that was a year old and we survived - it tasted absolutely fine!0 -
I always throw things when the use by date has passed if it has been opened, but may be tempted to use something if it was still unopened0

I am 26 and this is a genuine question, what did we do before Use By Dates were put on products? When my nan died we were emptying the cupboards out and found stuff that didnt have use by dates on. It struck me as odd that they didnt so I asked my mother, and she said things didnt always have use by dates.TOTAL AT START £13606.90 27/03/2018
TOTAL CURRENT £13445.90 29/03/20180 -

By using our senses... if it looks ok, smells ok and tastes ok, it is probably ok.Man plans and God laughs...Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry. But by demonstrating that all people cry, laugh, eat, worry and die, it introduces the idea that if we try to understand each other, we may even become friends.0 -
Does it look ok? Does it smell ok? Does it taste ok? If yes, it is probably ok!Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0

The date on the pesto will be a best before date not a use by date. If it smells and looks ok I would use it.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000

Yep, if the jar is unopened it will be fine to use. The oil in it is a preservative so nothing bad can happen to it. Once opened, I generally keep pesto in the fridge until it's all used up and that could be a month or two sometimes.
If you're stuck about how to use it up other than bunging it on pasta try smearing it on a sandwich with tomatoes and/or avocado. It's very good!0 -
Hi SKintmum
i have seen pesto grow mould, so i imagine it *should* be mouldy if it's not ok. Go for the taste smell test - if in any doubt, just bin it. I'll add this to the food safety thread later on
Thanks
