What does 8 kg of washing look like?

I have broken yet another washing machine.
I have been told on the last repair I probably have been overloading it. so am trying an 8 kg machine.
What does 8 kg of washing look like?? and is that dry weight??
What I need is an idea of how many towels or jeans or cotton tshirts = 8 kg
Anyone weighed their laundery???
Thanks for your help.

as far as I remember it is dry weight - for dyeing dylon say 500g is 1 pr of jeans or a bathtowel. might be worth trying to weigh a few items on the kitchen scales and then adding it up!

I can't give you a definitive answer but we have recently gone from 7kg to 8kg and the wife informs me that the new machine takes significantly more than the old.

If you fly, especially Ryanair, you will be aware that the cabin baggage allowance is 10kg. If the case weighs about 2kg then the contents would be 8kg, so a rough answer would be "a small suitcase worth".

Do you have bathroom scales? Weigh yourself, then put your laundry in bags and weigh yourself with the bags - you'll soon be able to work out 8kg :)

  • I've never weighed my washing - I just stuff the things in until I can't really fit anything else in:o My friend does weigh her stuff and weighs things in small amounts on her bathroom scales and then adds it up.

I am sure I over fill mine as well as I have 7KG washing machine really want a 9kg or 11kg and there is only two of us :rotfl:

There is suppose to be a big enough gap between the top of the washing and the drum to put your fist in. And no cheating by pushing the washing down ;)

It is suppose to allow the room for the washing to tumble about in the drum as that is what washing the clothes the powder just holds on to the dirt and stops it getting back on to the clothes.

As an engineer, I really can't imagine that you've been stuffing enough washing into your machine to damage it. You haven't broken it, it's just broken. However, laundry washes better if it has space to move around and weighing it may help you to judge that.

As someone who's trying to lose weight, get some bathroom scales anyway. They're useful for:

    weighing yourself
    weighing the laundry
weighing the luggage whe you're packing to go away
weighing the cat, dog or a heavy parcel - or anything else that's too heavy for the kitchen scales but lighter than you. (very useful for calculating postage prices for ebay listings)

For weighing anything except yourself, weigh yourself first, then pick up the item to be weighed and subtract your own weight!

Be aware that the bigger washing load will need to be dried and if you use a tumble dryer it will most likely need to be split into 2 loads.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
