Address Blacklisted?

Basically over the past month my partner and i have been trying to arrange a debt consolidation loan via our bank (Natwest) we both credit check fine, bank dont have any issues with us at all but we keep getting declined, bank believe its due to an issue with our address

We live in a rented property and the previous tennants dissapeared in a hurry leaving masses of debts (huge pile of bills when we moved in and the odd few since we've been here) Rental company seem pretty much unwilling to help so were kinda stuck, we dont wanna move just for the sake of it but the bank are of the opinion if the address is blacklisted this could impact future mortgage applications etc. don't wanna try another company as it could impact credit history etc.

Loan isnt essential just works out we'd save a few quid each month and pay everything off 6 months earlier which would be nice!

How long have you lived at the address? Have you transferred all your credit info to the new address?
The debt left by the previous tenants should not impact on your credit file as the search is done on you personally, and addresses are not blacklisted. The only time an address as a whole would be searched is if fraud is suspected. It may just be that you aren't showing on the electoral roll yet and maybe previous tenants are still live on it. You would need to contact your local authority to update that.
Also: the number of searches made on your credit file can impact a decision. You said you keep being declined so obviously you have applied more than once in the past month - every time you apply a search is logged on your credit file, the more searches the less likely you are to be accepted.

Have a word with your bank manager as well and ask him to make sure his/her staff are trained not to talk rubbish.....

    Exactly!
They aren't supposed to make any comment about why credit has been declined but refer you to obtain your credit file.
  • Thats the wierd thing we've obtained credit files and everythings absolutely fine, everythings transferred over to our new address where we've been for 6 months. We're the only ones on the electoral register here etc.
Regarding repeated applications theres only been 2 done by the bank one 2 months ago and one last week, loan request was for 12k over 3 years really annoying as the bank approved everything before we moved and we wanted to make sure it was a right decision and during this we moved and now its all gone to crap  Only things that've changed is our address and we now earn more...

Lending criteria ia tight as scrooge's bum just now - may just be a simple case of 'you didn't meet their current lending critieria', a recent move lowers your credit score. You could write to them and appeal and enclose a copy of your full credit report and ask them to explain what it is exactly that they don't like!

Change banks to one that won't lie to you - there is NO SUCH THING as a credit blacklist.

Credit applies to people and not addresses, so the bad debts from the previous occupiers should have no affect on your ability to obtain credit - they are not your debts.
