First time claim for JSA

Hello

I have recently relocated to Kent as my partner was offered work here in his field and I therefore left my job and am currently seeking work.

I just rang up to claim job seekers allowance, I have never claimed for benefits before and just wandered if people thought it was helpful and an ok thing to do! I have always paid taxes and thought I may as well try even though I really want to be working!

I was on the phone for 30 mins or so and have an appointment on Monday, will they grill me about all my finances etc? When should I expect my first payment, how much will it be! What if I temp and earn some money can I still claim?

Any help or insight would be appreciated as a newbie to JSA!

Thanks :rotfl:

The direct.gov site has all the information about JSA, it's a bit buried though so I have dug it out for you :D

I jut wanted to ad that although you will attend the job centre to complete your claim and then again for the first signing day you will not actually get paid until about 2/3 weeks (average 12 working days ) after the claim has been received at the processing office. Many new claimants assume that they will get paid 3 days after they first sign ,which is not the case.

You also need to be aware that a sanction may be imposed as you voluntarily left your job.
