Effects of defaults on Renting houses

Hi people.
I had to move back with the old dears last year due to my business going into difficulty + I was doing a course so was doing training rather than earning money. I have with the help of this site got right on top of things, debts have reduced and my business is doing better than ever.
I am about £6000 away from being some sort of debt free which I should be able to all but cover when I get my ppi refund from Lloyds, at this point I really want to move out as although I love the old dears we all drive each other round the bend.
The only problem is that in the process of getting in control I have taken 3 defaults. Do I in reality have any chance of being able to rent with an agent?. My mum has said she would act as a guarantor and I would probably be able to pay a few months in advance as a deposit. I had read somewhere that it was bankruptcy and ccjs that caused the real issues but 3 defaults with 2 months seems pretty damning to me also.
I'd be pretty disapointed if i'd gone through all the hard work of the last few months then could not rent anywhere. But then surely in this day in age lots of people have adverse credit and not everyone lives with parents or is homeless.
Love to hear peoples experience

Hi
I went om a debt management plan whilst renting a room in a friend's house. No CCJ's but lots of defaults! The first couple of letting agents I approached said no, but I was accepted on the third property I went for as long as my mum agreed to be guarantor. My friend wrote me a reference, if you have had no mortgate/ rent arrears it may also be worth pointing this out. Private landlords may be a better bet as they often won't want to credit check.
It does seem unfair that people in our situation are penalised as just because we have defaulted on credit cards/ loans doesn't mean we are going to refuse to pay rent! Good luck with your search, I do think that people are becoming more lenient as, like you say, such a lot of people have adverse credit these days.0 -
I have rented for the past 5 years in London with a variety of letting agents - with a default on file, and had no problems.

You should be OK no-one can say for sure it will be down to the agent and the credit score.
TBH if you can I would avoid agents like the plague, I have rented for years and my 1 and only very very bad experience was through an agent, I always try the local papers etc and try to deal direct with the landlord, I always feel a bit more secure that way.
In fact 2 of my old landlords and my current one are now very good friends of mine none of this would be possible had I gone through a faceless company whose only interest was money.........
best of luck
