Fed up

I have been working the past year and a half on a part time basis, I took the job to get off the dole as there was not much out there.

I have been looking and applying for tons of jobs each day, I look on job websites, papers, and have signed up for agencies and all have been a waste of time.

I apply for jobs that I have experience in and have had quite a few interviews, all with good feedback so why am I not getting lucky?

I need a full time job as I would like to move areas with my OH and also would like to leave my part time job as my boss is a nightmare.

I am running out of ideas of what to do, I would take any full time job offered and I am not fussy on wage as I know I can built it up.

What should I do as I feel like I am going around in circles?
No you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!

Wow...just read you post and it sounds like I could have written it. We're in a very similar position, redundant in Feb, jobseekers till May when I got a part time job (which I hate as the management are awful) and still looking for full time work. I had two job offers which were later withdrawn and about 4 unsuccessful interviews. I'm sorry I can't offer any advice as I'm equally fed up but thought you might like to know you're not the only one and there are others in the same boat. Just keep applying and hopefully your luck will change soon.

You're probably not doing anything wrong, the job market is really bad at the moment. I used to work for M&S, they have 600 UK stores and tens of thousands of staff yet last time I looked in the whole of the UK they had 6 customer assistant jobs available, all part time temporary positions. You used to be able to walk into basic retail jobs, now there are very few jobs going and a lot of people applying for them.

I agree I wouldn't imagine you are doing anything wrong as you are getting interviews, if you can ask for some more detailed feed back after your interviews and see if there is anything at all (there must be somthing) you could improve on. You just have to keep on applying, somthing will come along for you. You'll never fail until you stop trying ;)

Its true, you might not be doing anything wrong, there are hundreds of people applying for every job at the moment!

But others are beating you, it may be that they have more experience, or maybe they know somebody in the company. Could you do more to give yourself as much of an edge as possible? What sort of jobs are you looking for?

Something I read recently mentioned the vast majority of jobs are never even advertised. Who do you know in a job at the moment? How many people do they know? Worth asking them if they can listen out for something suitable.

Short of walking around every business park with 'giz a job' on a big placard wearing a chicken suit there isn't much else you can do to try and attract work!

I have sent CV's to every company in the industrial estates here, heard nothing back and that expensive. I always ask for feedback but they never say anything negative, its always you gave an extremely good interview can we hold onto your cv in case something else comes up for which it never does. I have experience in admin mainly, I am doing an OU degree as well(not in admin)

The problem is that if a company says anything bad it can be misconstrued and they could be taken to a tribunal so they just say the standard good thing.
The Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!

You can try asking for feedback, but it's unlikely you'd get many helpful comments - I'd not go into real detail myself as you never know why people are asking, perhaps they are looking for an angle to take you for a tribunal about! i.e. if we say the appointed person had more experience perhaps they'll try and do us under age discrimination!

If you are getting interviews you are half way there. You can work on your interview technique and see if you can get some practise sessions in somewhere. But you can't control the calibre of the other applicants; there may simply have been someone really outstanding, for whatever reason, among the candidates. That doesn't mean you weren't also good.

    Keep trying :-)
