HFC Cancelled direct debit and server default notice

I need some advice, HFC have cancelled my direct debit paid to them each month, they have not contacted me telling me they had done this, they have waited 3 months and then served me with a default notice.

I have spoken to my bank who confirm the direct debit was cancelled on the 2nd March 2010, HFC now want me to pay the arrears of £150 + late payment fees to bring the account up to date.

My problem is I did not stop the direct debit they did! How can they request payment of that amount plus charge me late payment fees and server me with a default notice when it is a problem they created?

Is there anything I can do about this?
