Panicking Student!

Hi guys,

I know this whole area is dedicated to making extra money but I've just found out I'll only have around £300 to live on at uni (plus possibly £60 a week from job once at uni) and I really need ideas for how to earn money over the summer.

Obviously, a job is the number one thing but my summer is slightly split, making it harder to get work:

I am working for a few weeks and should earn over £500 but other than that I have nothing and because the three weeks are smack bang in the middle of the summer it means I could only be employed somewhere for a month at a time.

Any tips?

TIA

when i was at uni, I did bank work for nhs as a auxilliary nurse. I could fit shifts into my days off, or if i was in uni half a day i could work the other half etc. I could say yes or no to a shift if avail, and I got enhancements for weekend shifts. There was reasonable money to be made esp at weekend. Again though it depends if you like that sort of thing. I know most of nhs area's in scotland do bank staff for nursing, cleaning, catering, portering, so many areas to consider

You will have a maintenance loan won't you? Any grants?

As a quick note, I was a student for five long, expensive years and my student loan just covered my fees and most of my rent. I had to work throughout my course, no real hardship I must say as I enjoyed most of the things I did.

For the summer: I agree with BeautyandtheBeast, the agencies will be your best bet. Maybe even bits and bobs doing ironing or tuition (if you study something taught to primary/secondary students).

In regards to termtime, if I was in the same situation again, I'd change a lot of things I did . I'd go across to the Old Style board and clue up on ways to save money across the board, there are people on there who live very happily on what I respectfully (and jealously) see a mindblowingly low amount of money.
However, I'd still work through the term. I found it a lot easier to find work after university than my friends who didn't work, despite one acquaintance getting a first and me getting a 2:2.
If you have a decent credit rating and you have the gift of the gab, try a mobile phone store or something sales-y - I worked at one with a red background and white writing ;) and I had my basic salary and then my commission on top which often was more than my basic. They will also need staff more at weekends than during the week.
Or perhaps a supermarket, after a probationary period you get a discount so double the beauty. Cheap food and the like AND wages.

Either way, I wish you all the luck in the world and I hope you enjoy uni!

Thanks a lot everyone - taken your advice on board and after calming down, realised that what there is to work with ain't actually that bad!:)
