dude - sorry to disappoint but last time i looked people looked at salaries, interest rates, expenditure etc to compare if a mortgage or a house was affordable.

Houses ARE overpriced.
I've seen flats for 100 000 1 bedroom above a shoddy take away shop which you could have bought a terraced house for back in mid 90's, less even.
