please consider the archetypes who post here, who refuse to take a rounded view. they'll froth like a 70's soda-stream. (pilger will be picked out soon as the authentic lefty, anti-war, sandal-wearing appeaser we should all recognise him as).

you know the sort: public bad/private good daily mail readers. white horse.. are you there? are your mates with you?

sad, sad, blinkered people who frenzy up over 'gold-plated' public sector pensions but don't raise a squeak over this type of 'trade'.

that said, headcone: ethical arguments over the arms trade have raged for decades, going back to WW1 (and probably earlier) so I'm not sure this post is 'news'.

First of all, please don't think I am defending the arms trade for I am not.

That aside, it's important to remember that BAE Systems sell weapons systems - guided missiles, interceptors etc etc - basically advanced weapons for developed countries.

Whilst they aren't exactly brimming with moral fiber they are in a different league from the companies that manufacture and sell small arms; those sorts of companies sell the assault rifles and automatic weapons that fuel small-scale and regional conflicts the world over and are scum in the true sense of the word.

BAE Systems do not manufacture or sell small arms.

If they didn't have the guns they would be hacking each other to death with machettes. Not sure which way I would prefer to go.

Also, if a British company were not supplying them, there are plenty of others that would happily take the business.
Making arms is something we are very good at.

Bae Systems are a defence company and sell countries equipment to enable them to defend themselves. btw They do own a company that makes small arms. Also if Bae systems didn't exist all the jobs and money would go to France, USA, Russia, China etc.

The maufacturing company may be private sector, but the end users and purchasers tend to work in the public sector.

As frothing posts go, this one seems to have filled the bath. Does it not occur to you that companies like BAE systems get a large slice of their income from public funds.
Blighty's top general - hotly tipped as the next head of the armed forces - has hinted strongly that the British defence industry can no longer expect to rely on sweetheart deals from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).
