I absolutely know where you're coming from, and completely understand the hostility this will attract for some. We DON'T want her going, but it is her dream and there's no stopping the completely stubborn. If you could help us convince her to stay home...? :)

Just wanted to know if it was an option, is all. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You dont want her GOING where?

Don't want her going abroad to work. We'd miss her too much.

She cannot try Greece, as she doesn't speak the language.

I apologize on behalf of Americans; we don't all assume we're God's gift, honest. :)

Actually, if she wants to come, then I am very much in favour of her coming over. I don't think you should try and stop her. But she should get it into her head that she has to fund herself.

I'd have to see her passport, it would have to be current (ie not expired), and I'd be looking for any stamps which clarified her right to work status. I think you're right that an EU passport holder is OK, but a non-EU passport would usually have something about the person's right to work in the UK, or not, stamped in it on arrival.

I don't think she'd be able to claim unemployment benefits, because she wouldn't have paid NI in the UK. But I'm not sure how we treat Greek nationals - I know with health it's reciprocal, ie you get what a person of the country you're in would get.

Actually that's another question, whether with her usual residence being the USA she'd be entitled to NHS health care, I think that is based on residence not which passport you hold, but again I could be wrong ...

Not all EU passports are OK - the A-8 countries (all of the countries that joined in 2004, minus Cyprus and Malta) citizens require registration under the Worker Registration Scheme for a start. It's automatic, but must still be done.

A-2 citizens (Bulgaria and Romania) require a work permit to work in the UK still.

None of those countries passports are endorsed in any way - but it's still the rules.

Bear in mind that for the vast majority of EU citizens, a passport isn't even a requirement to travel around the EU. I very rarely use my passport - what's the point, when I can travel around Europe using a credit sized ID card? Many people I know don't even possess a passport - why bother, when you can access around 35 countries on just the ID card alone?

She would need to obtain the EHIC card from the Greek government to be entitled to NHS care - unless she could show proof of UK National Insurance contributions. The NHS is somewhat dire at actually asking for this proof, however.
    From Poland...with love.

That is true, but you only get that once you are employed!! I know that for sure because I had to get one myself.

You need to give them letter from your employer and they register you against that employer - it is only administrative reason, the government wants to know what kind of job are these people doing here for their analysis.

Also you only need to be registered with them for the first 12 months (ie once you register and you change job during the first 12 month you need to let them know).

All the info is in that link I enclosed in my first post.

I always thought that if you have 2 passports and are dual nationality you only use the one that you want to.

IE if she only brought you the one that is EU you wouldn't even need to know she has second one. If she is EU national she has the same right as EU national, no matter what her other nationality is. But I might be wrong.

Are you 100% sure she has dual nationality? I didn't think it was possible for US citizens.

Some Americans I know who live here are torn over whether to apply for citizenship as it would mean giving up their status and vote in the US.

Yeah I know what you mean, I know for sure we cannot have US and Czech (that is what I am) nationality, but maybe Greece has some special agreement?

    Well, the OP must know..
