Hi All, I am mad at the moment and need advice, I was offered a job at UK Borders with Siemans back in January, and I have been waiting for security clearence since! till this morning I recieved a call from them stating that my clearence was still going through! but because of the change in govermet and cut backs my job is no longer available! SIX MONTHS I have waited no money coming in, I turned down three good jobs to take this one, is there anything I can do, my daughter reckons I should demand some sort of compensation, what do you all think any ideas as I think it is so wrong they should get away with this
Thank

I regret to say that there is nothing that you can do. You did not have an unconditional offer because it was subject to clearances, and there is therefore no contract in place. As a result you cannot claim anything, and the chances of them volunteering to pay you anything are zero.Hi All, I am mad at the moment and need advice, I was offered a job at UK Borders with Siemans back in January, and I have been waiting for security clearence since! till this morning I recieved a call from them stating that my clearence was still going through! but because of the change in govermet and cut backs my job is no longer available! Even where an unconditional offer exists, there is very little someone one do if a job offer is retracted - at best it may be possible to claim notice pay if the offer is retracted within the notice period (but given that is often only a week, it doesn't happen that often).0 -
Did you sign a contract with them? If not theres nothing you can do.!"£$%^&*()0

What kind of security clearance takes six months? I assume the job was never yours until you had passed these checks. Why didn't you take one of the other 3 good jobs while you had no money coming in for 6 months.0

Why on earth would you turn down 3 other jobs whilst this was going on?0

Agreed. I wouldn't hang around for a company messing me around like that.!"£$%^&*()0 -
Unfortunately there is nothing you can do. The job no longer exists. All you can do is focus on finding another job.0

Hi, I was offered the job signed the contract bank details etc,and was informed that my start date would be in six weeks time March! the date came and went with emails and phone calls assuring me that they had excellerated it and then the call this morning.
I did not take the jobs offered as I had signed the contract for this one and having been out of work caring for my disabled father for the last ten years till he died last year, the money and position was exactly what I wanted, and we managed on my husbands wages JUST! So I feel really jipped as you can imagine!
Thanks for the responces

Since the original start date was in March and that has now passed, there is no start date applicable and therefore even if a contract existed (which I still doubt) then there is no remedy financially. But I suspect that you will find that somewhere in all the paperwork there is reference to being unable to confirm the appointment until all clearances / references or whatever else is required has been received, because they simply would not be able to allow someone to start work until these have been done. That said, I agree with the other posters - there is utterly no explanation for why it should have taken six months (other than that they were stringing you along) because the norm is weeks and not months.0 -

Full govt security clearance can take several months.
OP, you do realise that your employer would have been Siemens, not Siemans?Gone ... or have I?0 -

I would be surprised if such jobs as these would require full DV security clearance (and hence take months) - most entry level and lower graded (and in fact a lot of higher graded) posts only require standard clearance and the estimated processing time is only 6 weeks. But maybe there is a reason for a higher level of security rating here - although one wonders why the employer would then have suggested a March start date.0
